Hey folks, so as some of you may have noticed over the last year my content has become much more scarce. During 2019 I made it a mission to post daily, every day and I pulled it off. Sometimes multiple times a day and people noticed! With our barn remodel not going as well as I would like and a second child being born in 2020 I feel like I lost momentum. I am sure Covid and all of it’s implications has not helped as well. This is not an excuse post by any means! Instead I am ...both asking for and offering help. First of all the offer, if you or someone you know is feeling dragged down or drained please reach out. I do my very best to always be accessible via socials or a call/text if anyone wants to talk or spitball ideas or just have a brainstorming session I am all for it! Don’t feel like you have to be in the same industry either, agriculture touches so many other sectors of life that we can all work together and provide insights to each other. Now the ask, I am thinking and planning ways to revamp my content and make it fresh and most importantly useful for my customers and anyone else that takes time to consume it. I need YOUR help to do it, if you have questions or ideas please message me, I would love to talk to you! I want to know what you, the consumers of my content would like to see. You can be as specific as what angle to hold your clipper at while carving in the shoulder area of the topline or as broad as what are some things that I would have done differently or sooner when starting KyVision as a business. I want to know what will bring you value, through videos or pictures or blog style posts like this. I know this post dragged on so if you made it to the bottom here thanks for reading and I hope to talk to you soon!

Tips for clipping in sand I know it is something that more and more people are struggling with so I thought I would share 6 tips to keep your blades sharp longer while clipping in sand bedded barns, enjoy and happy easter! Steel blades for udders-ceramic blades cutter blades are awesome for show clipping but the ceramic fragments easy in sand bedding causing the blade to dull faster. Stick with steel! ... Oil but not too much- when clipping in sand I still oil my blades but I do use less. Using too much oil can mix with the sand and create a grinding paste that will dull blades faster! Brush sand off/rotobrush- a big factor in keeping your blades going longer is to not run then through as much sand (duh) the 2 worst places I find for sand accumulation are on top of their short ribs and on their udder. A roto brush like some beef show people use in a drill is great for taking the sand off their short ribs and a soft bristled brush in your back pocket will take a lot of sand off their udder in a few swipes. Lots of spare blades!- this goes without saying but spare blades are a must, we are working on maximizing your blades performance but they will dull faster than if you were clipping straw or shavings bedded cattle. Wash cows if you can- I know it’s not always possible but a little soap and water goes a long way when clipping in sand bedded barns! Use a thicker blade- a thicker blade with wider spacing between the teeth will allow more sand to pass through instead of being caught up in the blade and clipper head parts. This helps your sharp blades last longer and prevents parts like blocks and springs from wearing out as fast.

#tipoftheday whenever you switch blade sets take a second and put a couple drops of oil on the 3 points circled (both pivot points on the drive assembly and the... shaft that the block fits onto) these places are often over looked and don’t need oiled as often as your blades while clipping but to keep things moving properly and not seized up they NEED OIL! Keep watching the page for daily content covering a bunch of topics, stay safe folks! See more

Clippers that come into the shop here aren’t just here to make them run, I am also checking for anything that could cause injury or damage like this plug. The old plug is the kind of plug I hate, no way to seal off the wires from moisture. A simple 5$ fix can save a lot of trouble!

Spring clipping tips from KyVision! The right blades: That first clip of the season you are most likely fighting with fluffy winter/baby hair, a set of sharp general purpose blades is the best thing for that first clip. I recommend the Aesculap premium flat bottom 31/23 blade set. DO NOT USE YOUR GROUND DOWN SHOW BLADES. Some animals can be uncooperative for their first clip and you don’t want to be replacing your show blades because a grumpy heifer kicked the clippers out o...f your hand! Oil- This is always an important thing to remember but it is even more important that you use a good oil while clipping off that thick winter coat, if your blades get hot they can start to raise the skin in spots and your clip job will look very patchy! Patience and time- Most people that are clipping cattle are also farming, some with a 2nd job as well! I get that it can be tough but planning and giving yourself enough time to get the job done goes a long way to ensuring both you and the animal enjoy the experience and want to do it again. I prefer to clip at night after all my chores are done so I can put my clipping playlist on and do my thing! Chute- Having a chute is a luxury, there is no doubting that but it will make your life much easier! It allows you to steady the animal and keep them from swinging all over the place. Pre training- Again this takes some planning but if you pre train your animals to stand by tying them up on a soft non slip area a few times before you clip they will not fight the halter as much and it will make life much easier! Wash- This might sound silly to some to be washing in the spring when the weather can turn from warm to blustery cold overnight. However even washing a week or ten days before you clip will make their topline hair blow up much better and your blades will stay sharper longer. Pick a nice warm couple of days in the forecast and wash during the middle of the day if you can. Good blower- Last but probably the most important you need a good topline blower. Un trained hair that hasn’t been worked before is always tough to get blown up right. Without a good blower is can be just about impossible! Hopefully these tips help as you get the hair off and see what your show prospects look like! Happy clipping folks! PS this lovely heifer in the picture sells April 10th in the Online Jersey Ontario OIS sale!

Picture credit to Mark Morbrook on this blast from the past! Fitting is often regarded as a young persons game, although some defy that generalization! I wonder which young fresh faces will we see on the clippers at this years ROYAL?! Happy Friday folks and enjoy your cattle as we all prepare and await for show season!!
