Langley Hospice Society's Supportive Program Centre is getting a new roof this week, and the folks of Adanac Roofing & Gutters are hard at work. We're incredibly grateful for the generous funds donated by the Township of Langley Firefighters' Charities through their first Chip-In Golf Tournament last year, and other community donors that have made this possible. We've included a photo of the cute baby raccoon, whose momma caused some extensive damage to the roof last year, when accessing a warm, dry space for them - which is what caused the need to replace the roof earlier than planned. We are ever-aware of the incredible support we receive from the community, especially during these challenging times - it's what allows us to continue to provide support and services for the people we serve. Thank YOU

In short, our friends at What's Your Grief, say Yes...

Langley Hospice Society 25.11.2020

We have learned that when people ask how any of us are doing, and when they really listen to the answer, with an open heart and mind, the load of grief often becomes lighter for all of us. In being invited to share our pain, together we take the first steps toward healing.

With the changing of the seasons, and the accompanying change in weather, we are all spending more time indoors, this coupled with the continued restrictions that don't allow us to gather in-person, can be challenging to say the least... Today is Children's Grief Awareness Day. Children's Grief Awareness Day is observed every year on the third Thursday in November and aims to bring attention to... the need for good grief support for grieving children and adolescents. Hey everyone, Ria here The #movieoftheweek is a 1998 classic: Stepmom. This movie has an all-star cast and is an extremely touching film about a family coping with divorce and a cancer diagnosis. Children Anna and Ben are struggling to adapt to living part time with their stay-at-home mother Jackie and part time with their father and his career-focused girlfriend Isabel. Jackie is diagnosed with cancer, and throughout the movie we see her go through different treatments. W...hen Jackie realizes her cancer is terminal, she has to come to terms with the fact that she is going to die and must mend her broken relationship for the sake of her children. Due to the subject matter, I recommend this movie for teens 13+ Discussion Questions: 1. Why do you think Ben asks if you can ever fall out of love with your kids? 2. How are the kids impacted by their parents divorce? 3. Do you think the way the parents explained cancer made sense? 4. How does Jackie explain her impending death to Ben? 5. How do Jackie and Isabel reconcile their differences?

Hey everyone, Ria here Because watching movies is so much better with a treat in hand, I’d like to share one of my favourite recipes for Halloween Popcorn Ingredients: - [ ] 10c. Popped popcorn - [ ] .5c. peanut butter (could substitute with WOW Butter for allergies)... - [ ] 3 Tbsp. Butter or margarine - [ ] 3c. Mini marshmallows - [ ] 1c. Chocolate of choice (smarties, Reece’s Pieces, Candy Corn ect. ) Directions: 1. Pop popcorn or use pre-popped popcorn. I recommend the Annie’s brand (it’s vegan and gluten free). Place popcorn into a large bowl. 2. In a medium saucepan, melt butter or margarine over medium high heat. Stir in marshmallows and when almost melted, stir in peanut butter. Be sure to stir the mixture constantly so that it doesn’t burn. Once fully melted, pour it over the popcorn. 3. Mix together and add in your favourite chocolates! I always add in Reece’s Pieces but for those who have a nut allergy, any other kind of chocolate could be substituted. I find that once the mixture cools, it’s easier to mix by hand. 4. Enjoy! Place any leftovers in an air tight container or plastic bag)

Hey everyone, Ria here For today’s #halloweenweek post I am sharing FOUR Halloween movie recommendations! *Please note the recommended minimum age for each movie* Room on the Broom (Ages 3+) This short film, an adaptation of the book by Julia Donaldson, stars a witch, but she's by no means scary: She's quick with a smile and a laugh, and kind to the animals who all ask her for a ride. 1. What are some lessons we can learn from this story? ... 2. How do the characters help the witch? Who helps you when you need it? 3. Do you ever have bad dreams with scary characters like the dragon in them? 4. If you were a witch, what would you do with your magic powers? 5. If you had just one wish, what would you wish for? Hotel Transylvania (Ages 7+) Drama and hilarity ensues when a human discovers Dracula's faraway resort for monsters and other mythical creatures. The movie is from the POV of the monsters, so they come across as the good guys. 1. Which monster do you think is the spookiest? Why? 2. Why did Dracula build the hotel? Do you have a special place where you feel safe? 3. What are the monsters afraid of? What are you afraid of? 4. Dracula says as a father you do everything to keep your family safe even if you have to break their trust. Do you agree? 5. What does zing mean? Hocus Pocus (Ages 10+) A curious youngster moves to Salem, where he struggles to fit in before awakening a trio of diabolical witches that were executed in the 17th century. 1. Do you believe in magical creatures like witches and wizards? 2. If you could perform a spell to re-awaken the dead, would you? Why or why not? 3. Max tricks the witches to save Dani. Is there anyone in your life you can count on? 4. What do you know about the real events of the Salem Witch Trials? 5. Which character did you like most? Why? The Others (Ages 13+) Grace is a devoutly religious wife with two ailing kids. She moves with her family to a mansion on the coast of England while she awaits her husband's return from World War II, even though he has been declared missing. When Anne begins to see ghosts, Grace just thinks it's her new, eccentric, servants. But as Anne's visions grow more chilling, Grace is forced to believe something supernatural is happening in her own home. 1. Do you believe in ghosts? Do you think that people who have died can communicate with us? 2. If you could see your special person again, would you want to? 3. Do you think this movie approaches death in a realistic way? Why or why not? 4. Does your family have any religious or spiritual beliefs about death or an after life? 5. How did you feel about the ending? Were you surprised?

I can’t stop the grief or the joy so I’m splitting the difference between them and soaking up the moment Hey everyone, Ria here The #adultread book of the week is Splitting The Difference by Trè Miller Rodrìguez. I’ve said it before, I’m a sucker for a good memoir and this was a really interesting read. I feel like this book would resonate most with young widows, as the author’s story is about losing her husband when she was only 34 years old. Trè writes about her mar...riage to Alberto, her experience of funeral planning and writing his eulogy and the weeks, months and years after his death. She talks about stumbling her way though many difficult decisions and cringing at the insensitive and tone-deaf remarks people make about her grief. Her memoir is raw and her feelings are relatable. This book can be found in audio format at Audible.ca and available to order in print at chapters.indigo.ca. At 18, Tré gave her newborn daughter up for adoption. At 19, her only sibling was killed in a car crash. At 34, she lost her husband to a sudden heart attack. But at 36, her teenage daughter found her on Facebook and began to reshape the course of Tré’s life. The sum of these milestones is Splitting the Difference: A Heart-Shaped Memoir, a nonfiction work that is equal parts inspiring, irreverent and heart-rending. Through sharply immediate prose, Tré unpacks her experience of being young and widowed in New York City: the dumb sh*% people say; the brave face she wears to work or social events; and the lack of solace in one-night stands. Her perspective only begins shifting when she spontaneously brings Alberto’s ashes on a trip and sets into motion the ritual of spreading him in bodies of water around the world. Traveling to Bucket List destinations like Savannah, Brazil and Cuba, Tré discovers a strategy for facing her roughest days.
