Stephen Lack's Everyday Life continues until November 7. (Back in the office version) Yes we are open ! And the Velgo is open to the public. We are keeping our regular hours : from Wednesday to Friday 11:00-5:00pm and Saturday from noon to 5:00pm. There are very few visitors so if you are skeptic about visiting, it really is a very safe environment with a maximum of four people allowed in the space. "The only reason to believe in God is because you can't believe in humanity." Stephen Lack, Journal of Contemporary Art, in an interview with Philip Pocock in his studio, NYC in August 1987. Already at the beginning of his forties the artist shares his disilusioned perception of humanity. Which led me to this clever thought : "When we perceive one side, the other side is concealed." I guess the trick is to always keep this in mind. And retort to our favorite objects of desi...re.. One of those phantasy objects definitely has to be the car. The car, is there something that man invented that had more impact on the world ? The roads, the access to millions and millions of kilometers of asphalt.The jobs, the petro industry, the whole economy around and with tge car. Maybe by turning our attention to those that divert and distract and bring us to the brighter side of life ? Stephen has turned his attention over and over again in the last 50 years of his life. (He is consistent with some of phantasies.) Theoretically this piece is not in 'Everyday Life' but it actually is.. (in the office ) And there are so many other great pieces by the prolific and rarely off the mark Montreal born artist that was part of the East Village scene back in the eighties with the likes of so many driven people passionate about art and reinventing the scene with the likes of Keith Haring, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Sherrie Levine, Mary Boone, Tony Shafrazi, Leo Castelli, Peter Schuyff, Pat Hearn and so many more. It is a great pleasure to have all these works around us all day at the gallery. Always fun and lots of great moments sharing this solid, smart, lucid and beautiful work by our own Montreal born Stephen Lack.
