I like to think that 'dressage' can be the foundation for any horse. Tagged some students who ride across a range of disciplines for their thoughts.

There are lots of things over the years that have been passed down as 'things we do' when training horses. We had a post just this last week about kneeing or... otherwise punishing horses when they are getting saddled, due to them puffing up - science has since disproven something that was taught as a regular practice to many horse people decades ago and was unfortunate passed down to successive generations. Now we know better. Now we can do better. But in light of revelations like this, we are at risk of throwing the baby out with the bathwater. Here is an example of another old practice that science has now proven does work - the rein back. I can remember sitting ringside at H/J shows watching warm-ups in the '70s and this was one of the most frequently employed practices to produce a quiet, light, rhythmic canter - the rein back. I don't think anyone back then realized why it worked, and but people knew it did work, so they used it. Now science has broken down the steps for us so that we can fully understand the 'why' behind what we are doing. Another step in the right direction. See more
