The power of reflexology. One of the therapies we are using in our pilot study, and we will be using MYCAW.* This is a case study from one of my students (Jack...ie Hamilton School) which illustrates the effectiveness of this treatment. 76 year old man with Parkinson’s who suffers a lot of back and neck pain due to a typical Parkinson’s stoop was amazed and his wife sent me a message 2 hours after Reflexology treatment to say wow what have you done to him , he is jumping out of the chair and hasn’t got any back ache . . After his second treatment, as he walked in church, many people commented about the speed he was walking and how upright he was !. . It isn’t lasting longer than 48 hours though. . When he comes back from holiday he is wanting 4 consecutive daily treatments to see if this prolongs the benefits. . This is one of our students treating him as a case study. She qualifies in June. . She will be using MYCAW to track his progress. ==== * What is MYCAW ? MYCAW, Measure Yourself Concerns and Wellbeing, is an individualised questionnaire that has been designed for evaluating complementary therapies in cancer support care. It may be suitable for use in other settings too. It is an adaptation of MYMOP. The Cavendish Centre for Cancer Care and Bristol Cancer Help Centre, piloted MYMOP at their centres and found that it had certain disadvantages. Consequently a multidisciplinary research group has designed and piloted this new questionnaire, called MYCaW. As you will see it is similar to MYMOP and retains the patient-generated format and the seven point scales. However it uses the terms 'concerns or problems' instead of symptoms and it does not include a score for activity. It includes an extra open question on the follow-up form which asks 'Reflecting on your time with this Centre, what were the most important aspects for you?' MYCAW is now being used routinely in several cancer support centres and has also been used in other settings. Publications about the development and validation of MYCaW are listed below. - words taken from the Briston University Website. Link below. We would encourage all therapists to use MYCAW http://www.bris.ac.uk/primaryhealthcare/resources//sisters/
