A Gift Of Love As I walk to the door and ring the bell, it is with mixed emotions. I remember a happy couple, just married, excited to be on their life's jour...ney . With no children, their cats are their babies. Many nieces and nephews and other family to love. An important aspect of their lives, was to make sure they had life, disability insurance , and saving for retirement. We touched base throughout the years for reviews and update their circumstances, and to catch up about family. The door opens, our sad faces, and eye contact is the only real way to communicate with caring. With masks and no hugs allowed we begin our conversation about what a great guy her husband was. How he always had a kind word for everyone. And how ill he had been for the last year. About how they never gave up the hope that he would recover with radiation and chemo. However in early February between tears and much love it was time to say good bye. Today I was keeping a promise they had made to each other, and I made to them. Making sure if anything ever happened to either of them, there would be dignity, and no worries of facing the journey alone. With the support of family. A chance to grieve the "love of her life." With the purchase of life insurance so many years ago, his "gift of love", was ready to give. He was 58, and she is 48. The planning we do in the early years helps us in the event of something catastrophic happening. Life can change in the blink of an eye. So, life goes on. Memories help us cherish those we have lost. And I realize how important my profession is, until I'm needed to help keep my promise to my clients. Stay safe, be well, and protect your loved ones, because you just never know..... Hello Everyone, It’s Bells LetsTalk Day ...Mental Illness...not just a state of mind! Diagnosed diseases such as bipolar, PTSD, psychological issues caused by an event...may be very apparent and folks seek treatment right away. However what about the silent sides of Mental Illness. What if there are no signs that are apparent to family, friends, our doctors...what then? We have all seen in 2020 how depression has become a factor in people’s wellness. Much brought on by ch...anges to our everyday existence. Yet many in our society struggle with anxiety, stress, mild or major forms of depression, events that have traumatized us at whatever age. Yet we believe we can still function normally. We smile, we cope, we act as though we are okay. We have seen the results if the person suffering does not get treatment ....suicide, retreating into self, self destruction either physical or mental deterioration. There has been so much stigma attached to mental health like shame, it is your problem not mine, or oh it’s not that bad . Believe someone when they tell you they do not feel like themselves. It’s true. Help someone reach out! Hear their silent scream! More so now than ever we need each other to be well. The resources available to us in our communities are here for us. Even if you can reach out to a friend or family member ...they will help you. Support is here for you. At work it could be your EAP program. At home it may be a wellness show you saw. Whatever the trigger is...please, please reach out or have an advocate ...do not suffer in silence. How do I know? I’ve been on the surviving end of a traumatic experience! I’m well because myself and others gave me the encouragement I needed to get the help I needed to work it all out! Be well... We’ll never forget September 11,2001. Here is our own Halifax International Airport on that date. We had 40 flights diverted here that day, and 8000 passengers were taken into our homes and hearts as we took care of them. Because that’s how we roll on Nova Scoria.
