2020 here at Long Table has been a wild ride as it has for so many other small business owners, but we are wrapping up the year so incredibly grateful for the support from our community of customers, suppliers and allies in the local food world, and we are happy to be still hanging in here with you, hopefully for many years to come. This year we had a lot of plans that didn’t materialize but thanks to our hard-working and committed team we were able to improvise, grow and ad...apt to be able to go in the different directions our customers needed us to, which sometimes was pretty intense to be honest, and I wasn’t sure some days that we would make it this far but I am glad to be here with you still. Our local farmers had a super tough year weather-wise adding to their stress but we were still able to purchase literally TONS of produce from our hard-working local heroes and get it to our amazing customers. We are incredibly thankful for the energy they put into growing food - it is a labour of love so often and a difficult calling to have some days! This year we have been able to expand the number of local businesses and farms we support through Long Table thanks to our awesome customers and hope we can continue to grow in that area in 2021. We love seeing new businesses and farms starting up - there is so much happening in this area and it’s really exciting for the future of our region. Special thanks to my incredible sidekick and manager Kari who rose to every occasion this year required with such resilience, creativity and grit - we literally could not have got through this year without her! Big props as well to the Long Table team - past and present - I am so grateful for all your hard work and commitment to our community here. Looking forward to 2021 there is not much that I am certain of except this we need each other, come what may, and I am all in for these people and for this place. Big love to all of you as we start this New Year.

Today was such a whirlwind I didn’t take a minute to post anything but thinking back over today (and this year really) I’m just so so SO grateful for the people I get to work with every day. My team has been working really hard to make things run as smoothly as possible and get all the food to all the people and one of my favourite things is seeing them rise to the occasion at every challenge with patience and grace and diligence and kindness. We laugh every day and although some days we cry too, it’s always worth it. This is a first around here - we’ve got Buddha’s Hands in today! These are a new fruit to me but apparently they are in the citron family. They have a strong lemon taste, kind of like lemon zest with no bitter. You can enjoy them raw - anywhere you would use lemon zest, these would be super interesting. We are going to be using ours to make some infused vodka for Christmas gifts they are perfect for that too! This rad start-up is based in Vernon and co-founded by our friend Jaye at @farmboundbox. These amazing ladies made it onto the season finale of Dragon’s Den which is airing this Thursday and we are SO stoked for them and can’t wait to see if they made a deal! We were looking at some photos last night of my husband Will's paternal Grandmother Joan and he told me some things about her I didn't know before. She grew up in a small town at the crossing of 4 rail lines - Hudson Bay Junction in northern Saskatchewan and her family owned the grocery/general store - Jarvis Store. She was fully a rural hardy Canadian girl, the 5th of 8 siblings and apparently when the war started all of her older siblings and her father left to serve in the... war. She wanted to go also but wasn't allowed due to a mild medical condition so she ended up running the family grocery store, I assume with her mother, when she was just 17 years old. In the winter she made grocery deliveries with a dogsled and team and in the summer she had a sidecar for her bicycle and we think she did that at least until 1945, possibly longer. She did eventually move to BC in 1951 after marrying and having a few children but I find the image of her stepping up to serve and do what was needed here at home during that time, while everyone else left, to be quite moving. She would have preferred to go serve overseas and I am sure there were many in similar positions across the country quietly doing the work of feeding people, caring for others and keeping the home fires burning with very little attention or acclaim. This was the beginning for her of a long life full of community service, (and thankfully she did eventually get to travel) and there are so many like her all around us who step up to do what is needed, even if it is difficult. Sometimes what is required to serve is not bravery or valour or the things that bring home medals and accolades. Sometimes what is required is the willingness to do the small things that show care for those around us - a meal or groceries for a neighbour, a kind word to a child, respect for each other's boundaries, tolerance for differing viewpoints, a driveway shoveled, space given in a checkout line or a check-in with a friend on their own. I know there are so many of you who are doing this unseen work day in and day out and I want to say thank you - I see you and you are making the world better every day. These times we are living through are not even close to what our country went through during WWll but I feel it would serve us well as a community to consider what it might look like for us to try to rally those same resources we did as a culture before to find a way through, to stay strong together through challenging times. What is the next right thing to do? How else can I contribute to more good in the world? What more is there for me to do? We all have our own answers to these questions. For us, I am inspired by Joan to keep delivering groceries, to keep showing up for our neighbours and friends - but I am sure glad we don't need to do it with a dogsled anymore! Thank you Joan for your service to your community and for inspiring me even now. XO, Amy

Thought I would share a few meal ideas for the gorgeous Red Kuri squashes we have in right now from BIG FIRE FARM. I find squash to be a nice substitute for meat if you are working with a budget or just want to eat more vegetables! These three meals come together really quickly and you can kind of make them at the same time to save kitchen prep time. Dinner - Squash Burritos Brunch- Puffed Oven Pancake Dinner - Squash Soup with Tortilla strips ... Dinner Sauté 3 chopped leeks, sliced mushrooms, 1 lbs potatoes diced and 1/4 of the squash peeled and diced until veggies are soft. Set aside half the cooked veggies for the next meal. Add 2 tsp. LTG Kitchen taco mix to the other half of the veggies with a little water and cook for a few minutes more. Serve on taco shells or soft tortillas and salsa, sour cream, grated cheese and chopped peppers, cabbage or tomatoes. Dinner is served! Brunch Warm reserved veggies in a little butter lightly in an oven safe large frying pan until warm. Cast iron works great for this. Mix 1 cup flour, 1 cup milk and 4 eggs until smooth and pour over veggies. Bake in a 425 oven for 20 mins until puffed up and lightly browned on edges. Don’t open the door until the time is up or it will deflate. Serve with sausage or bacon if you like or mixed greens if it’s for lunch. Top with salsa and chopped scallions if you want. Dinner While the pancake was baking I sautéed some onions and one more leek in a bit of oil in the bottom of a soup pot and chopped up the rest of the squash. I also chopped up a small cauliflower I had but you could also add any other veggies you want or more potatoes. Add the veggies to the pot with enough water to cover and simmer until veggies are soft. I had also wrapped a few heads of garlic in foil and roasted them in the oven with the pancake and added them at this stage. Once it’s cooked you can use a hand blender to make it a puréed soup if you want or just mash it a bit with a potato masher. Season with 1 or 2 tsp of LTG Taco Mix to your taste. You could add a can of black beans if you like as well. Prior to serving cut 1 or 2 tortillas into strips and bake about 10 mins until crispy in a 350 oven. Top soup with tortilla strips and serve!
