If traditional dry eye treatments are proving to be ineffective for you, further relief is on the way. IPL (intense pulsed light) is a state of the art treatment that is safe and effective. The treatment uses powerful pulses of light (in the 500 to 800 nm wavelengths) to introduce an anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory response in the eyelid and surrounding tissues (notably, the meibomian glands, which are targeted directly). While it may sound complex, you can think of it a...s a technologically advanced warm compress. This treatment causes the glands to secrete more normal fluids, improving your tear quality. As you can imagine, this has a notable impact on the severity and frequency of dry eye symptoms. If you’ve got dry eyes, it’s important to book an appointment to see your Optometrist help you find a treatment plan that helps combat your discomfort. Here are some screening tests you can expect when you come in for an evaluation: Tear Break-Up Time (TBUT) TBUT gives us an indication of how stable your tear film is. Because the tear film in people with Dry Eye Disease is unstable, it will break up faster than normal and cause the eye surface to feel uncomfortable. In a TBUT... test, a dye is added to the eye and the tear film is observed while the patient avoids blinking. TBUT is the time it takes between a blink and the development of tiny dry spots in the stained tear film. The longer it takes, the more stable the tear film. If your tear film breaks up in less than 10 seconds, you may have Dry Eye Disease. Fluorescein and Lissamine Green Staining These tests use a yellow or green dye along with a blue or white light respectively to detect damage that may have occurred to your eye. A piece of blotting paper containing the dye is touched to the surface of the eye. The patient is asked to blink, which will spread the dye on the tear film. A light is then directed at the eye. Any problems on the surface of the cornea will be stained by the dye and appear green under the blue or white light. Meibomian Gland Expression This test allows us to see if your oil-secreting meibomian glands within the eyelids are clogged. These oils help prevent tear evaporation.
