Did you know that breast milk contains a large amount of indigestible sugars known as human milk oligosaccharides (HMOs)? These sugars don’t provide energy to the baby. Instead, they feed the bacteria that live in the baby’s gut (the microbiome)! These HMOs are believed to be important for developing the baby’s immune system. If you’re interested in learning more about HMOs, check out this review article published last month Human milk oligosaccharides: Shaping the infant gut microbiota and supporting health, by Walsh, C., Lane, J. A., van Sinderen, D., & Hickey, R. M. (2020). Journal of Functional Foods, 72, 104074. https://doi.org/10.1016/j.jff.2020.104074
