Florencia Glow by Mark Penney, 24x36" acrylic on canvas. Florencia Bay is a favourite spot of many on the west coast of Vancouver Island. Nuu-Chan-Nulth people regarded it well as a winter fishing spot. ... Arthur Lismer painted there for 17 consecutive years, staying in the miners shacks that were there before the park boundary interrupted the mining activity on Lost Shoe Creek. Some locals still refer to it as Wreck Bay after the wreck of the Florencia that was beached there when the salvage ship towing it cut her loose while having mechanical difficulties. iiaapi The Wind Blows Against It by Mark Penney, 24x36" acrylic on canvas. Available I really try to capture and convey that sense of what it feels like to stand there.... TinWis (Calm Beach) was a Tla-o-qui-aht Halibut fishing camp, and this island out front is iiaapi [pronounced eechappi] it means 'The Wind Blows Against It' in Nuu-chah-nulth language. Names aren't just names in Nuu-chah-nulth , most words are made up of constituent parts that describe the place itself or how it is used. In 1811 a ship from NewYork was here to trade furs and it infamously was blown up. It's a terrible tale and today the name on most charts says Tonquin Island because of it. For thousands of years it was called a different name by the Tla-o-qui-aht, who still live there. It took considerable effort to find out the name. I googled, I asked around, I asked specific people known to have a lot of local knowledge. An old academic research paper had maps in Nuu-chah-nulth, and Tim Masso was kind enough to transcribe the old written words to the newer written language, Richard Mundy helped me learn to pronounce it. #vancouverisland #artist #markpenney #painting #westcoast #art #myucluelet #markpenneygallery #ucluelet #tonquininsland #mackenziebeach #tinwis #iiaapi #sharingart #instagram
