With warmer weather upon us, the Guelph Police Service and Guelph Humane Society are reminding people not to leave dogs unattended in motor vehicles. Police and... GHS officials were called Friday morning to a plaza in the city’s south end. Several people called police about a dog which had been left alone in a vehicle with the windows rolled up while the owner attended a pharmacy for a COVID shot. Police were able to remove the dog from the vehicle and eventually located the owner, who was very apologetic. No charge was laid, but a Guelph Humane Society official said dog owners could be charged with creating a situation likely to cause distress under the city’s Animal Control Bylaw. Such a charge carries a penalty of $610 including court costs. The Guelph Humane Society attends approximately one call per week during the summer months about dogs left alone in a hot car.
