The Metis Settlements General Council has been working on an Indigenous Protected and Conserved Area and we are looking to complete our Pre-Feasibility Study to support the creation of the Indigenous Protected and Conserved Area (IPCA) in two areas of the Athabasca region that contain sites of cultural and ecological significance for the Métis Settlements. Protecting these areas through an IPCA model would support the rights and traditional land uses of the Métis Settlements by maintaining the ecological, spiritual, and cultural integrity of the land, water bodies, and wildlife. The Metis Settlements Indigenous Protected and Conserved Areas (IPCA) initiative is focused on understanding and protecting historic and current Metis values in areas around Wolf, Touchwood, and North Buck lakes. One of the ways we are collecting information is through a short online survey (just a handful of questions) about the study areas and their importance to community members. If you have a few moments to spare, we would love hear your thoughts! Follow this link to access the survey: https://bit.ly/2Ip4ssn

The Metis Settlements General Council is in the process of working with Alberta to review, edit and update the Metis Settlements Act. The Act is requires thorough updates in order to remove outdated language and create a clear path to self-governance. You are able to view an online version of the current Metis Settlement Act at the link https://www.qp.alberta.ca/documents/Acts/m14.pdf The Minister of Indigenous Relations has put forth several minor edits that are being prop...osed for removal from the MSA along with a few more significant edits and is open to discussions on larger changes regarding the Metis Settlements Land Registry in the summer. To gain as much Settlement member input as possible during this Covid-19 Pandemic it was requested by the Metis Settlements General Council Assembly that a survey be developed that would allow for the input to be requested. Below you will find a link to the 15-question survey that we are requesting Settlement Members complete. It is also understood that not everyone wants to or has access to an online device, if you wish to complete a paper version of the survey and mail back to us, please contact our reception at 780-822-4079 and request a mail in copy, providing us with your complete contact details and we will be sure to get one out to you. https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/MSGC_MSA

ORANGE SHIRT DAY CHALLENGE - SEPT. 30 On September 30th, we honour the Indigenous children that were taken away from their families to attend residential schools. This is the time of year when government agents would come into communities and take the children. This day was declared Orange Shirt Day in 2013, in recognition of the harm the Residential school system did to Indigenous children, started by Phyllis Webstad a Residential school survivor at Williams Lake, British ...Columbia. The Indian Residential School program is sending out a Challenge to all the Metis Settlements Leaderships/Administration offices and schools, to wear Orange on September 30th and send in your photos to Metis Settlements General Council. We need to continue to bring awareness and support to our Settlements about this tragic time in Canadian history, and Always remember those children that returned home and those that did not. Please join us on September 30th, Orange Shirt Day and lets remember all of those children, that did not come home, our strength and prayers will continue to keep them alive in our Hearts, because EVERY CHILD MATTERS! MSGC Treasurer was very honoured to attend the Installation Ceremony of Mrs. Salma Lakhani as the Nineteenth Lieutenant Governor of Alberta. The ceremony was very beautiful and heartfelt. MSGC looks forward to a great relationship with Her Majesty, the Queen’s representative in Alberta.
