It is so easy to believe much of the misleading dietary information that we are assailed with every day, from fad diets to supplements that will boost metabolism. Marketing campaigns are designed to appeal to our need for a quick fix, because making real, long-term changes to diet and lifestyle is not easy. And sometimes we sabotage our own best efforts. For example, after discussing food choices with one of my diabetic patients, I found out that he was making his smoothies with orange juice. While it can be a source of nutrition, the orange juice caused his blood sugar levels to skyrocket. Substituting water and adding protein powder helped get his levels under control.
