On this date in 1969, the Queen Elizabeth 2 (QE2), the flagship of Cunard Line, set off on its maiden voyage from Southampton, UK, to New York. Cunard Line had ...operated successful passenger ships since the mid-1800s, and in 1958, the company started drafting a new ship to replace the RMS Queen Elizabeth and RMS Queen Mary. As air travel was cutting into the passenger ship industry, Cunard Line planned a new cruise-friendly ship that was smaller and more cost-efficient than previous ocean liners while large enough to make global trips. With a government loan, Cunard commissioned John Brown & Co. to build the ship, which commenced on July 5, 1965. The maiden voyage was first scheduled for January of 1969, but turbine problems delayed the preliminary trials. After an uneventful test cruise to Las Palmas in the Canary Islands, the QE2 was ready to serve commercial passengers. The ocean liner was immediately profitable, and the QE2 gained more notoriety after serving passengers rescued from the damaged French ocean liner, Antilles. The British government commissioned the ship to transport troops during the Falklands War, and Cunard performed extensive repairs and refurbishments in the 1980s and 1990s. By August 2002, the QE2 had traveled 5 million miles, and 41 years after its launch, the ship completed its last world cruise in 2008.
