North of 49 Photography 24.12.2020

It was a different year for all of us at North of 49. With covid restrictions we decided to not run our common loon workshops. Although many people were disappointed as they know how great our host and workshop guide Kevin is at getting people the desired images, they understood. But nothing changed for Kevin, he was out on the lake everyday following our local pair with the hatching of 2 chicks. They were named R2 and D2, Mother Nature took our little D2 but R2 grew up into a healthy specimen adding to our declining common loon population in North America. As Kevin stated, that’s a wrap for the season on the lake as winter is slowly making its way into the north. We hope covid will be a thing of the past soon so you can join Kevin in 2021 for what we call, one of our signature series workshops at North of 49

October 4th. Loon Watch - Day 114 It has been 14 days when I last saw R2 on Salerno. Spent this weekend on the water and no sign of R2. I'm thinking R2 has migr...ated. This is the earliest we have had a chick migrate from Salerno. This is one of my last images of R2. It's been an incredible journey this season for our Loons and so rewarding to know we have added a Loon to the population. We can't forget about D2, it will always be part of the Loon Life Cycle on Salerno. I want to thank everyone who have followed this journey with me and supporting the Loons. Very much appreciated. Farewell R2, have a safe migration, grow and be part of the Loon Life Cycle. See more

For years now I have scoured the lands of Yukon finding all its beauty and creatures. But mystery has always had me curious whats behind all the mountains I see? Well, after more than a year of planning we finally found the golden key to getting behind the mountains in this image. A place that has no public access and is given out by permit only. Details to come soon, limited spots available for this once in a lifetime journey among the glaciers and mountains!

Being a travel photographer has been quite challenging these past months. Covid-19 has altered a lifestyle of many causing depression and other mental illness to appear. As if these times are not challenging enough for one, there are many other world issues that have come forward. Many people are being consumed by current affairs like myself, loosing that grip on the sanity that was kept at bay by a camera in hand. In the past 6 years we have taught and traveled with well ove...r 1000 friends and clients. I have learned photography for many is an escape. Perhaps to be more in tune with nature, capture that once in a lifetime image. Be surrounded by like minded people, or just an escape from reality. What ever that struggle may be for you, just know you are not alone. Remember to take a few moments and put that camera in your hands. Find a place to photograph and enjoy just being out with a camera. There is no need to hunt for that perfect image, we just need mental clarity, exercise and to keep our passion alive inside us. We will all be back on the road soon enough my friends, enjoying a view like my posted image. I can't wait to be there to see that smile come across your face! On behalf of Kevin K, Jess and Chris Stay safe and happy shooting!

Over the past few weeks the songbird migration has taken my mind off of Covid-19. I find photographing songbirds is something I never get tired of. It is exceptionally changing, yet very rewarding when you get the image desired. After looking over your images you know that one day you may just get a better shot. That is exactly what drives a photographer in their craft. Most of these images are from around the house, now that the trails are open I plan to venture out more as the small warblers and other species should be here any day now. Happy shooting!! Chris
