Did You Know? In 1992, we established two new funds, the District of North Vancouver Heritage Fund and the Senna and Nicole Strongman Memorial Awards Fund which was later expanded in 2010.

This week, the local non-profit we are recognizing is the North Shore Women's Centre. The North Shore Women's Centre has been serving women across the North Shore since 1973 offering a safe space out of their Drop-In Resource Centre, as well as through various programs & services.

One of our favorite places is Edgemont Village. f their customers, parents, and children stroll the sidewalks and benches are spread throughout the village to pause and soak it all in. Edgemont Village is known for its mid-century modern architecture and just minutes away from the Capilano Suspension Bridge, the village is the perfect place to stop for lunch, dinner, or even just coffee.

The Marie Pearce (Founders) Fund was established in memory of one of the Foundation’s pioneering members. Sheila Gilmour writes the very first president’s report in the first Annual Report. "We have already opened a Founders’ Fund in the name of Marie Pearce, a long time North Vancouver resident and committed community worker. It was she who had the vision which inspired the Board to the tasks that have been done and those that lie ahead. Marie has moved away to enjoy a well-...earned retirement but our thanks will be perpetuated in the Fund that bears her name, to which the Society’s founding members have been moved to pledge themselves." - Sheila Gilmour in her first annual report in 1889. This week, we are recognizing North Shore Community Resources Society as a local non-profit serving residents of the North shore for forty-four years. North Shore Community Resources promotes a healthy, strong, and connected community by providing a broad spectrum of resources and services to North Shore residents of all ages. They offer programs for families, children, and seniors, as well as information and referral, volunteer connections, legal information, advocacy, and more.

This month our featured Board Member of the Month is Raf Sansalone, Director. A resident of the North Shore for the past 47 years, Raf has recently retired from a long career as Director of HR at Bordon Ladner Gervais LLP. In addition to lending her unique skill set to the NSCF, she enjoys reading and taking yoga classes, as well as spending time with her family. Given a choice, she would love to have dinner with Oprah.

During Thanksgiving weekend and with the support of so many corporate and personal friends, donors and supporters, we delivered 80 Thanksgiving Day turkey dinners to worthy North Shore based families. Here's what one of our recipient organizations had to say: As a result of this creative, philanthropic gesture, our Youth Safe House, two of our Transitional Housing programs for youth and a youth led family with young children had the best dinner ever, while several familie...s we support that are impacted by domestic violence were blown away and, four of our Indigenous families were over the moon with such an outstanding meal. It was truly a gift that truly left ten families thankful and for that we too are thankful. Please extend our sincere appreciation to everyone at the Foundation for this initiative. The North Shore Community Foundation was set up in response to community needs. Founders included citizens drawn from the community who were committed to creating a Community Foundation aimed at improving the lives of the residents of the North Shore. The founding directors included: Marie Pearce (first President), John Roger Clark, Joan Whittow, Sherrill Hardy, Olga Kempo, Norman Smith, Isobel Gibson, Salim Kaderali, David Pink, Sheila Gilmour and Jacqueline Coinner.

I hope this communication finds you and your loved ones healthy and managing to stay positive and engaged during this unusual time in our lives. In regards to our Annual Golf Tournament rescheduled to Friday September 18 and due to the COVID-19 pandemic and following the Canadian Federal and Provincial health and safety protocols put in place regarding large gatherings , it is with heavy hearts we have decided to postpone the tournament this year. As we all navigate through t...hese unprecedented times, we apologize for the disappointment but look forward to welcoming you back next year. As you may know, the Foundation established a North Shore COVID Relief Fund a few short months ago and to date, we have received over $86,000 towards this fund and have disbursed much of these funds to several worthwhile Not For Profits including our two beneficiaries Athletics For Kids and Avalon Recovery Centre. We made the decision to grant each of these organizations $15,000 together with our commitment to fulfill our obligations in the future. Other fund beneficiaries included; Canadian Mental Health North and West Vancouver; Family Services North Shore; Harvest Project; Parkgate Seniors Centre and Quest Food Exchange to name just a few. We are so deeply grateful to so many of our golf tournament sponsors including Adera Development; Concert Properties; Darwin Construction; Neptune Terminals; PARC Retirement, Royal Bank of Canada, Seaspan Marine Transportation, Trans Mountain, Wesmark, Western Stevedoring and Woodbridge Homes for their kind and generous support with this initiative! I would also like to give a shout out to James Lester and Sons of Vancouver Distillery. Throughout COVID, James and the Sons of Vancouver team re-engineered their production process to making much needed hand sanitizer. James has donated thousands of litres of product to countless worthy organizations throughout the North Shore and Greater Vancouver....thank you James! WE HAVE RE-BRANDED! The North Shore Community Foundation is proud to announce our brand new logo. Our Foundation has a proud legacy of giving back to the communities of North and West Vancouver, Lions Bay and Bowen Island and is part of a network of over 180 Community Foundations across Canada. Some of these foundations date back decades, while others are more recent. What unites each, however, is a common desire to give back to their respective communities.... The North Shore Community Foundation is no different. Since its establishment in 1988, the Foundation has granted over $1.5 million in financial assistance to a host of worthwhile community programs run by various registered charities here on the North Shore.

Due to some complications in our application process, we have pushed our application due date to August 1, 2020 (usual date, July 15). The Judy Dennis Emerging Artist Training Fund was established in 1994 with a bequest to the North Shore Community Foundation by the late Judy Dennis. Judy, whose artistic interests were wide-ranging, had a particular interest in encouraging artists to develop their skills in any discipline and was the driving force in establishing what is no...w known as the North Vancouver Community Arts Council.
