This is opening weekend for #Walleye #fishing in many #Ontario Fisheries Management Zones. Over the past month, community hatcheries have collected Walleye eggs... to raise and then release into public waters in Ontario! This is a photo from the Almaguin Community Hatchery Program who have finished collecting Walleye eggs to raise in their new portable hatchery trailer. A group of dedicated volunteers built this new facility over the past year and a half! The group received Community Hatchery Program funding in 2020 through our Capital Improvement Grant Program to help build this hatchery trailer. Happy #ThrowBackThursday! . Throwing it back to the days when busloads of students would visit the Heritage Centre every week for our full-day education programs . Throwing it back to a time when the centre was buzzing with excited students learning, hands on, about the role anglers and hunters play in conservation... . We can't quite put in to words just how MUCH we MISS hosting and teaching students every day . But just know that we are working hard behind the scenes to re-package our educational field trips in order to bring conservation education to YOU! . More details coming soon... . Until then, educators! whether you are teaching from home or in the classroom, check out the Resources LINK on our web page . www.hfhc.ca/resources See more
#WildlifeWednesday . With moose and deer season open, or soon to open in several parts of Ontario... this is an important post . Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) is a fatal and untreatable disease of the central nervous system affecting members of the deer family (e.g., deer, elk, moose, caribou). CWD is a devastating disease that has killed and infected thousands of deer and elk in North America ... . Symptoms? Weight loss, repetitive behaviour, drowsy, lack of coordination, drooping head, trembling, drooling, increased drinking and urination . Spread? Close contact between animals. CWD can remain in the environment for years . Is CWD in Ontario? No but we must be vigilant! MNRF has been monitoring for the presence of CWD since 2002 THANKS to deer hunters. Deer hunters, check out ontario.ca/cwd to find out how YOU can help with your harvest . Are Humans Affected? No, but it is recommended that the meat and organs from the sick animal not be consumed . For more information - click here -> https://www.ofah.org/issues/cwd/ https://youtu.be/lA8XyWR9Zg4
With the gun season now OPEN in many parts of Central and Southern Ontario for white-tailed deer - we wish all hunters the best of luck for a safe and successful harvest !
The fall season to hunt Black Bear is currently open in most parts of Ontario . In addition to the mandatory harvest report, successful Ontario Bear hunters are asked to submit two premolars to the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry for aging . The rings in the root of the tooth, just like the rings of a tree - indicate the age of the bear... . This helps biologists determine the age structure of Ontario’s Bear population . Hunters play a key role in managing healthy wildlife populations . #conservation #fallbearhunt #foresttotable See more
