Today we are sharing a poem about the delights of black walnuts by second-year student, Elizabeth Westin, inspired by one of our courses. She includes an introduction to the poem: Let us not forget one of the most exciting uses for black walnuts, that being its transformation into liquor! For liquor to many is a special delicacy that is consumed only in the most special of times. Black walnut liquor, although not a popular statement in much of the world, is described as a d...elicious slightly bitter mix of sweet and spicy treat. This treat sounds delicious and makes one eager to try it! Perhaps while sitting up against a warm fire on a cold winter night, in an attempt to escape from the reality of the looming essays one might have due just around the corner. One might even be inspired from just the taste of this liquid courage to jot down a bit of poetry about how one is grateful that God created such a thing as a black walnut tree! If I were to attempt to write a poem this is what I would put down. God bless the tree, that this here nut hath grown on, for without, one would surely miss out, on the splendor of sipping the nectar known to man as spirit. This delight helps man to see a new light, And with it, man will, will it into well work. Man upon touching his lips with this God given liquid courage, will move man into a point of inspiration, to write and express to others delight! A spoken thought that will not be forgot. Farewell to days of old, when life seemed to be more of a hold, on man’s great destiny. Destiny beyond writings of pure structural dismay. Let life be brought to the ol day, the day of past gleam and bright sereign, where man could flourish without the beam, of captivity. When man looked beyond compatibility, and instead drew into that once well known feeling of being untethered! Let man rejoice! For now man sees the blessing that it is, the blessing of escaping, the blessing of breathing without limitation. How from such a lowly nut could this be found? Only through the calling from beyond could man discover the possibilities to experience the way in which life was meant to be. For man to see God’s love in every entity.
