Here are some of the items included in our COVID Relief Packs! Using your generous donations, we buy all of the products from local suppliers in Guatemala. This way we ensure your donations are supporting local merchants who rely on their businesses to provide for themselves and their families. Any and every donation counts, so be sure to check out the link in our bio for ways to help out! #OnebyOne #BeGoodDoGood

We are also partnered with the Elementary School of 20th of October! The Elementary School is located in the community of 20th of October in Barcenas, Guatemala. It currently has a student population of 125, 22 of these students coming from the neighbouring community of Los Olivos. There are a total of 3 teachers and 5 classrooms, one of which is shared with teachers and admins, and the grades taught are from Junior Kindergarten to Grade 8. The school began to be built in 2...014 by an american foundation who builds schools around the world. Yet, students officially began to attend class in 2016. In 2017, the school was officialised by the Ministry of Education, guaranteeing records and instilling report cards as requirements to continue further education. If a child were not to obtain a report card they would otherwise being deemed without the proper prerequisites to advance in their schooling, most likely ending their education for life having only gone as far as Grade 8. Since 2019, the Brant Haldimand Norfolk Catholic District School Board (BHNCDSB) has supported a school bus program allowing 22 students from neighbouring community Los Olivos to study at Elementary School 20th of October who would have otherwise not have had the opportunity to go to school. Having some form of education is extremely important. Just the basic skills of reading and writing obtained from attending elementary school allow children an array of opportunities they otherwise would not have. This is why One by One is dedicated to continuing to aid the Elementary School of 20th of October. #BeGoodDoGood #OnebyOne

Today we’re introducing the Community 20th of October! 20th of October is a small community located in Barcenas, Guatemala. It holds a population of 350 individuals, including 100 families and 131 children between the ages of 0-16 years. Founded in November 2003, the community name 20th of October signifies the Revolution of 1944. During this time, citizens of Guatemala overthrew a dictatorship that reigned over 40 years, and thus became a democracy for the first time. Refer...red to as the 10-years of Spring, with the new government institutions emplaced, a 10-year decree was initiated and many Mayans and their families were given back stolen land. There, they were able to grow, modernize and provide for their families directly off their own land. Families came to purchase land and to form a community escaping Guatemala City for more security and work opportunities. Because the land they purchased is private, the government is not currently bound to supply the community with basic necessities. Community 20th of October is a community below the poverty line with a median income of $500/month and the majority of the community also works in the informal work sector (which accounts for over 50% of the work force in the entire country).

COVID has hit everyone hard and has made everyone adapt in different ways. Unfortunately, over the last year, it has been difficult for One By One to directly access our partnered communities. Instead, we have focused our efforts in the basic survival of the communities as they struggle to have their basic needs met to protect themselves, their families and to provide essential food during various lockdowns causing job loss and unsafe work environments. One By One has been a...ble to provide essential covid relief packages to various communities during the pandemic. We are working hard to help supply our partnered communities and many others with essential survival items as long as the pandemic wears on and until we can safely access the community under our coordinated plan with all community leaders. We are lucky to have secured donations within Guatemala allowing our reach to go further than our two partnered communities. We have many people in Canada who have recommitted during the pandemic to helping in One By One partnered communities and will be key in allowing us to provide these essential items throughout this coming year and certainly into the future. With all of this help and generosity, during the pandemic we have been able to reach 1,599 families in 10 different communities. We have just recently applied for the same donation again and have upcoming COVID survival donations approved and planned for the next few weeks directly in our partnered communities. We thank everyone for your on-going support during these continually uncertain and trying times. Together, we continue to Make A Difference #OneByOne #BeGoodDoGood
