Tips for seasonal cottagers: Please remember that road access to seasonal vacation homes can be severely limited during the winter months due to snow accumulat...ion, many cottage properties are served by narrow private roads and lane ways. This can slow or limit the response of the fire department in emergency situations. Please ensure that you have a snow removal plan and remember that fire trucks are large vehicles. See more
Humour does it better....
With more people heading to our provincial parks camping this summer, I would like to share my story with everyone as a concerned veterinarian and dog owner. W...e recently visited Algonquin Park for a backcountry camping trip. On the first day after our 5hrs paddle and portage into the park our 80lbs dog Kaya started acting very strange. She was very sleepy, staggering on her feet and started dribbling urine. She was very reactive to sound and movement around her face and started vomiting. As veterinarians we quickly realized these were the typical signs of cannabis ingestion. We figure she must have picked something up while on the trails along the way. This was a very scary experience being so far from civilization with a sick pet. We kept Kaya warm in the quiet tent and continued to check on her periodically until the clinical signs started to wear off. Dogs have more cannabinoid receptors in their brains, which means the effects of cannabis are more dramatic and potentially more toxic when compared to humans. A small amount of cannabis is all it takes to cause toxicity in cats and dogs. I share this story for two reasons: 1) For the dog owners camping this year to be aware of the signs of marijuana intoxication: - Many of the signs of intoxication are neurological. Pets may become wobbly/uncoordinated. They may be hyperactive, disoriented, and very vocal. They may also develop urinary incontinence (i.e., urine leakage) and vomiting. In severe cases, tremors, seizures, and coma can result. Physical signs include low or elevated heart rate and decreases in body temperature. Fortunately, these side effects are usually short-lived, but they can still be dangerous and make the pet quite miserable. Pets may need to be hospitalized in severe cases 2) If you are taking marijuana products with you camping this year please be responsible and don't leave anything on the trails or sites. Leave no trace. Meaning take the products with you or dispose of your waste appropriately. In addition, THC can be present in feces so use the Thunderbox or make sure to bury it if you can't make it to a box. Thanks for reading. Kaya enjoyed the rest of her trip and is happy to be warm and back home in her bed
UNFORTUNATE BEAR Yesterday we got a phone call about a black bear that was hit by a car and lying unconscious in the ditch. Aspen staff quickly responded and wi...th the help of the OPP to stop traffic, we were able to get him secured and safe. After a quick check up back at the facility, no major wounds or fractures were found but we’re pretty sure he has a very bad headache. With lots of pain meds to help were hoping he’ll start feeling better soon! #blackbear #animalsofcanada #wildliferehabilitation #keepwildlifewild For more information on our facility, please check out our website www.aspenvalley.ca

Looking for employee! Need someone for a few days a week to help out. Can be any age (doesn’t have to be 18). We have a safe setup. The store is closed to the public with window service protected by plexiglass!
We have had a few inquiries as to why the store is not open for customers to come in and shop. We want to clarify why we can’t open the store and must offer deck side window service instead. 1. Our store is less than 1000 square feet taken up mostly by shelves, freezers, fridges, beer cases and the Canadian Shield lol. Our staff would have difficulty restocking shelves, cleaning handles and surfaces as frequently as they should in the small space while the store has custom...ers in it. There are times when there are longer lineups that are formed throughout the store. With all this going on everyone would be tripping over each other and social distancing would be impossible. The government has opened things up but physical distancing is still required. If a business can’t achieve this then they can’t open their doors so we have not. 2. While letting only a few people in at a time protects customers from one another it does not protect the staff from the customers-they would be exposed to each and every customer that enters the store in some way. We have minimal staff and some over the age of 60. We will NOT put them at any additional risk that doesn’t need to be taken. To help streamline things we have opened a second window and designated a lineup at the side of the store when it gets busy. Both windows have a full list of beer, wine and spirits that we carry along with knowledgeable staff that can tell you what products we have. Keeping customers out of the store may reduce your ability to browse but it also reduces how many people handle/touch the products you buy, allows you to social distance and keeps the staff safe. We only have a few employees and if 1 of us gets sick it could shut the entire store down. We are still not accepting empties or water jugs at this time. We do not have the staff, PPE or setup to safely take these back. The Beer Store in Parry Sound has designated hours that they are accepting empties. We appreciate your cooperation and understanding. Safety is our #1 priority. Just because things are opening does not mean the pandemic is over. We all have to do our part in every way we can and this is how we are doing ours. *Ignorance will NOT be tolerated*
