Have you seen the lights of Jung Uk Yang’s sculpture #21 [Standing Workers #21] spin and glow in our exhibition RhythmScape? One of Yang’s kinetic works, this sculpture represents a failed actor working in an ice cream parlor. Based in Seoul, Yang’s work captures the rhythm of the small, inadvertent movements made by those whose jobs are repetitive and done while standing, and his pieces invites us to observe and consider the hidden stories found in these gest...ures. Learn more about Seoul-based artist Yong Ju Kwon’s practice and explore the meaning behind his installation [Tying] (2014), which reveals the relationship between an individual’s lived experience and economic systems. In this exclusive artist video, Kwon discusses his installation, which juxtaposes his mother’s recollections of working in the textile industry to make a living for her family with images of a Thai silk factory whose workers also retain hope for a stable life.... This installation, which illustrates the effect that social structures and environments have on the rhythm of a person’s working life, is now on view at the OAG until January 3rd, 2021. This cityscape, called Montréal, was painted by Fritz Brandtner in 1935. Born in Germany, Brandtner immigrated to Winnipeg and later settled in Montreal, where he became well known for his role in introducing European Expressionism to Canada. Expressionists focused on feelings over reality and expressed emotion through tones and shapes, as can be seen in this painting of Montreal. Here, Brandtner conveys a mood of despair through the dark background colour, while diagonal lin...es and dynamic shapes reveal the uncertainty felt throughout society during the Great Depression. #OAGfromhome Montreal, Fritz Brandtner, 1935, oil and wax crayon on rag paper.
