FOR MY SOUTH AFRICA ALUMNI! Can anyone else relate? I will always be able to say i bungee jumped the worlds tallest bungee jump. It’s my ‘fun fact’ I use whenever needed . + climbing the Drakensburg was pretty epic. I really loved getting to know the student leaders in Soweto. The relationships I made with them were special, I still keep in touch!... Shark diving did not go as planned for our boat but ended up being an experience we all look back at and laugh. Half of our site had exactly the kind of experience advertised at the shark diving company, seeing multiple great whites and swimming with them (on the other side of a cage). Our boat strayed into some rocky waters and nearly everyone got seasick. The only shark we saw got a taste of our lunch. Good times! Going on a 5 hour hike as a whole group along the breathtaking eastern coast of South Africa starting in Mdumbi. Worshipping together on the penguin beach in Jeffery's Bay as we watched the sun set.
Sitting in a remote Guatemala town and drinking coke in a glass bottle with site leaders talking about life. I will never forget my experience living with my host family in Guatemala. I remember feeling completely lost when I first got there, but they were so welcoming to me. They were so kind and helped me a ton with my Spanish! I am very thankful for them! One of my favourite memories from Guatemala was at my homestay in Chuk Muk. Our host sister and mom spent and eve...ning trying to teach us how to make tortillas and we failed miserably, but had so much fun. Worshipping on warm Guatemalan evenings

Bungee jumping in Whistler. I never could have done it without the growth that happened for me on Outtatown. I had been scared of heights for so long that I never thought I would ever be able to do anything like this but Outtatown provided the space for me to continuously face what I was afraid of. I'll never forget how scared I felt looking out over the edge but also how supported I felt as I heard everyone cheering and encouraging me on. That day I felt a part of a community, I felt loved, and I felt God in a way that I hadn't in a long time. What was your bungee jumping experience like??
As a site leader, debrief was one of my favorite weeks every semester because it was the time I got to hear from each person about what they had been learning and how they had been challenged to grow. Many times I found myself beaming in pride and love for these students and the people they were growing into. These weeks were a time when I could see God moving so evidently through storytelling, prayer, encouragement, and shared laughter.

We were in Guatemala and a group of us had the opportunity to teach English to children at a local school. We then unexpectedly had the chance to meet the Mayor and he had treated us to dinner which was half a fish. Some of us got the head and others got the butt, it was an all around good time. Probably one of my favourite memories from Outtatown was when I reached the summit of Acatenango just as the sun started to rise. It was so uplifting to watch day begin from what felt like the top of the world, surrounded by all my friends. It was like looking at Gods face for the first time.
"Part of my work [as a community developer] has been to help change the police system in [South Africa]. Now you can imagine having to work with the police? These were the ruthless, heartless people [who had enforced Apartheid] and my job was to help change and educate themand also to work together with communities, to say 'okay we have a new system of policing in this country and we have to work together.' [...] I have experienced the worst of racism in my life, and God had... to help me, transform me, so that He could call me to disciple and empower others to fight racism." If you missed yesterday’s discussion on Anti-Racism & Discipleship on Searching for Hope, you can watch it all on YouTube. There are some great prophetic nuggets of wisdom and truth in this discussion. If you are crunched for time, jump past all the intros/opening statements (to 55 minutes) for a great dialogue that covers memory, inter- generational trauma, and reckoning with white Jesus. We're incredibly thankful to the panelists for vulnerably entering such a courageou...s conversation. It was a delight to see so many familiar faces (in one room!) from the Outtatown South Africa program and to meet someone new! https://youtu.be/1SRAqBGkmLE?t=12
Now live! Join the Anti-Racist Discipleship webinar now streaming on youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1SRAqBGkmLE
We’re Live Streaming! Due to popular demand, we've made the decision to livestream Sunday’s Webinar. There are a limited number of spots left in our Zoom room, which allows you to chat with other attendees and ask questions of the panelists. Once this room is full, our overflow attendees can view live on YouTube. If you haven’t already, Register. Link is in bio. Here’s a question we’ve already received: What can I do if I have Jesus following friends, that deny the existence ...of racism? How can you reach them? Let us know if you have a question for us to include. #antiracistdiscipleship
In this prison cell on Robbin Island, Nelson Mandela rewrote the history of South Africa. His election in 1994 was just the beginning of a long journey of working for racial equality. We’ve invited this group of panelists for their unique experience and or perspective on working to address Racial inequality from a Christian perspective, and what role does/has the church played, and what role can it play? We want your input, what questions do you want us to ask? Go to @searc...hingforhopeshow and DM or comment on the post to share your questions. All questions will be anonymous unless otherwise requested. There’s still a few spaces left, be sure to R E G I S T E R. Link in bio.
Introducing our final panelist... Antoinette’s life was changed for ever on June 16, 1976, when her brother Hector Pieterson was the first student (13 at the time) shot and killed by a white policeman amidst the student uprisings in Soweto. It’s said that the image of Antionette, and Mbuyisa Makhubo carrying Hector changed the world. It was this image that put South Africa on the map, that urged the rest of the world to fight against the oppressive systems of Apartheid. Now, ...Antionette helps to run the Hector Pieterson Museum & Memorial in Soweto. She finds life in meeting with students, and sharing her story. It’s a story of perseverance, pain and courage. In 2016 she had the pleasure of inviting/touring President @barackobama and First Lady @michelleobama through the Hector Pieterson Museum. Antoinette, welcome to the panel!
