Did you know this week has three made-up Chinese "festivals," each originated from a different numeronym? Because today's date and the words " " sound very similar in Mandarin ([ ] vs [ ]), May 17 is regarded by many Chinese as a day to eat more food for pleasure or fun. While having [] as the official pinyin, the word "" in Mandarin is pronounced as [] when it's a part of a number (phone, room, bus etc.)... Other than our class theme of the month, we also engagingly covered Mother's Day last weekend. Our Indies Voyagers students used one of the class activities to practice saying "I love you" in Mandarin and learned the pinyin and tones. Most of them already knew how to write "I" and "you" in Simplified Chinese characters, so we learned how to write "love" together and encouraged them to say and write "I love you" to their mothers in Mandarin! Besides writing practice, they a...lso creatively added hearts or other icons around the words they wrote. Shanghai pan-fried buns ( /shngjinbo/) are noted for their soft top, crispy bottom and moist filling. These golden-looking buns are a popular Chinese breakfast or snack item. These buns are typically served with a savoury and juicy pork filling plus some spring onion, but other kinds of fillings like shrimps have become more common in recent years. Are you a fan of these warm and yummy Chinese-style soup dumplings ( xiolóngbo)? You may have heard that they are the signature food of Shanghai or Nanjing. But according to Wikipedia, the very first xiolóngbo originated in Changzhou, Jiangsu Province, in the years of Daoguang Emperor (AD 1820 to 1850). Interestingly, xiolóngbo was developed from the larger soup-filled dumplings/buns ( guàntngbo) in Kaifeng, Henan province, which is over 700km away from Cha...ngzhou. In the meantime, Shanghai and other parts of the Jiangsu Province (Nanjing, Wuxi, Suzhou etc.) developed their own styles of xiolóngbo. We’ve heard that those from Wuxi are larger and sweeter than the Shanghainese ones! Small businesses are the of our communities. Let’s help keep that beating during this difficult time. Otherwise, many of us will not survive the pandemic and our communities will look quite different on the other end. We are grateful for being able to continue our programs virtually during the pandemic. We want to thank all the amazing parents that continue to support us so we don’t have to shut down. It really does take a village to raise a small business! We want to... send love to all the small business owners with the new lockdowns starting tomorrow. The reality is that many of the owners have taken ourselves off payroll for a long time so we can pay our staff and vendors, our owners included. This could really be the last blow to make some of us let go of our dreams. YOU can help! We need up or help. It doesn’t have to be about buying something. It could be as simple as liking a post, sharing a post, or posting a review on Google. We appreciate every little bit of help and they all make a difference so we can survive this.
