This comes up often in appointments or conversations with clients, where they indicate that they don’t add salt to their food to reduce sodium intake. I like to re-educate and suggest that table salt is the best place to get your salt from. The other 95% of our salt intake comes from our packaged and processed foods. These foods are often higher in salt for preservation and flavor. If we choose lower sodium packaged foods and more whole foodsthen adding salt while cooking enhances the natural flavor of foods while giving us adequate intake of sodium. Table salt is also ionized to give us adequate intake of iodine for thyroid function, so don’t skip it #nutritiontips #myths #hacks #saltshaker #pinksalt #seasalt #nutrition #diet #mealplan #athletes #food #sports #coach

We’ve said it before and we will say it again, health and weight loss are not mutually exclusive. Intentionally not eating for hours or days on end is not optimal for your body’s nutritional status, bone mass, lean tissue preserves, or energy availability. What it will do is use up excess calories in your body through various mechanisms to survive therefore creating weight loss, but it’s still not healthy. Consuming copious amounts of fat and or protein with little to no ...whole grains, complex carbs, fruit or veggies may change the mechanism in which your body burns and stores energy but it may also increase risk of certain types of cancer, cause significant constipation, and nutritional deficiencies leading to cardiac complications. It may create weight loss but it’s not healthy. Restricting calories or portion sizes will create a calorie deficient and therefore weigh loss but depending on the severity of the calorie restriction, this can cause malnourishment, low energy availability, low bone density, and poor cognition, to name a few. Yes CICO results in weight loss, but is it healthy? *on a rare occasion, some of these methods may be used as medical nutrition therapy by a dietitian to support a clients metobolic or autoimmune disorder but only a dietitian can prescribe MNT and should not be widely used by the general population* #keto #IF #intermittentfasting #calories #portionfix #diet #weightloss #nutrition #dietitian #dietculture #health #haes

Sugar is a fast acting carbohydrate that provides the body and muscles readily accessible energy in the midst of activity. These fast acting carbs also replenish energy in the muscles (glycogen) after activity to ensure optimal performance for your next training session. Without these much needed carbs, your body has to change the mechanism with which is breaks down energy to fuel your body. This is a longer process and slows down performance. Diet culture on the other hand is so scared of all food especially carbs and sugar. Sugar has a purpose. #diet #sugar #sports #gatorade #sportdrinks #dietculture #carbs #performace #weightloss #peloton #foodfear #fatphobia #nutrition #healthy #athletes

A dietitians super power is the art of assessment and asking ALL the questions! This list can go on and on and on! A dietitians goal is always to support nourishment and to repair your relationship with food. I continually see Facebook group after Facebook group of women asking the best and fastest way to lose weight. (This is an issue in itself that we tie our worth up in our body size and that it consumes 90% of our day, but I rant about that enough.) The same diets are me...ntioned and recommended over and over: keto, intermittent fasting, noon, WW, shakes. The truth is that YES all of these will work and you will lose weight, if you adhered to the diet rules. This will create a calorie deficit and therefore weight loss. The reality is that we know that after one year only 5% of people will have kept that weight off, and after five years only 1% of people will still have kept the weight off. So congratulations if you are the 1-5% of people! Please note though, that you are the exception, not the rule! (Hahaha name the movie) But why do diets fail 95% of people? It’s because they create these strict diet rules and don’t ask the hard questions. Firstly, if you have lived a life of yo-yo dieting and disordered eating than the last thing you need is another diet to further destroy your relationship with food and dissociate from your body’s hunger cues. If you feel like stress, or trauma is the cause of recent weight gain then the issue needs to be addressed and coping skills need to be in place, not food rules. If genetically you live in a larger body, then likely you are meant to live in a larger body. Diet can’t change genetics, and that’s okay most of us aren’t made to be thin. That body however can be fit and strong and healthy. If you can’t afford or don’t have access to food than further restricting your intake or being told to purchase expensive shakes is the opposite of the support needed. There is so much more to food, nutrition, and nourishment than blanket restrictive diets for the masses that will likely creat weight gain 1-5 years down the road. Healing your relationship with food and your body can last a lifetime!

So this little catch phrase don’t eat things with ingredients you can’t pronounce has been around for several years and I was just reminded of it the other day by one of my most favorite people I totally get how this seems to be a logical concept to follow if you want to eat mostly whole non-processed foods. However, keep in mind that food fortification is different than processed foods and food additives. A lot of sports drinks and energy bars will have extremely long li...st of ingredients which may actually just be a lot of B vitamins and protein indicated by their scientific names. This is food fortification. When a food item is enhanced by additional vitamins and nutrients to promote good health. Just because you can’t pronounce it dosent mean you shouldn’t eat it! Swipe right for the natural ingredients in a banana. #pelofoodies #peloton #science #food #foodmyths #supplements #nutrition #foodfacts #vitamins #healthy #dietitians #eatfood #foodscience
