Just because it snowed this morning doesn't mean ticks won't be active today! They are active at temperatures above 0. Here's how to remove a tick using a tick twister.

It is with sincere sadness that I am announcing the retirement of my practice partner, Dr. Doug McDermid. Dr. McDermid has been a Partner/Practitioner at Peterborough Pet Hospital since the mid nineties. Dr. Doug has been a very caring and compassionate veterinarian during his time at Peterborough Pet Hospital and will certainly be missed. We will continue to provide the care for all of his patients. ... Id like to extend my best wishes to Dr. Doug and his family for the future. Its been a pleasure working with you! Dr. Joe Muise DVM

In the 36 years I have Practiced at Peterborough Pet Hospital this is the first time that we have all been faced with such a threat to our Country. Premier Fords announcement yesterday stated veterinary services are deemed essential and I thank him for that on behalf of our four legged family members. Peterborough Pet Hospital will continue to be open for urgent and emergency appointments to our clients Monday to Friday during our regular hours. We will be closed Saturda...y mornings just for now to give our staff the rest they so deserve. KVEC will handle weekend emergencies. We are remaining open to serve you with reduced staff numbers in order to minimize risks for you,our clients, and our staff. I thank you for your patience as it is a trying time for everyone, we will do our very best. We have implemented an appointment protocol to minimize any risk. We will also provide telemedicine and prescriptions through our front office. Preventive medications that are very important for the wellbeing of our patients are available for pickup. Please call ahead. All elective surgery is on hold. I cannot express enough thanks and gratitude to all of the staff at the hospital. Those on temporary lay-off ( Julie, Lynda, Carly, Dr. Deb, Amber,Enid, Tanya and Nicole ) thank you and you will be back as soon as restrictions are lifted. To those on the front line keeping our services going (Heather, Patty, Trista, Kimberly, Dr. Jeff and myself) A big thank you and we will continue to provide our patients and clients the safest access to health care for those so important and loved four legged family members. It is a stressful time for all and I thank everyone for pitching in and being so understanding. With reduced social interaction I hope that this Covid-19 pandemic will soon come to an end. Our thoughts and prayers are for everyone dealing with this very trying time. Stay safe and please self isolate for the time being. Its the most important thing you can do right now. God bless you and your families and all the other people and pets of the greatest country in the world, Canada. We will win. Dr. Joe Muise DVM Peterborough Pet Hospital

Important Notice Due to the COVID 19 Virus and the awareness being raised, we as a clinic have made the very hard decision to reduce our services to ensure we limit social interaction. In order to protect our clients and staff we have implemented a locked door system until further notice. At this time that means we will be running one medical appointment at a time and we ask that you call us from the parking lot (705)742-8837 to check in. The staff will then unlock the do...or and signs will be posted as to which side to wait. Only one person will be allowed to attend the appointment in order to limit exposure. We will also be closed on weekends. If you are picking up food/prescriptions we ask that you call from the parking lot and pay over the phone using a credit card or e-transfer, No cash payment can be accepted at this time. We will then place your pick up in the allotted green bin with your name and a receipt. The measures taken are for your health and welfare as well as our staff during this difficult time. Thank you for understanding. Please stay safe.

A lot of people have been asking me how Gabby is doing. She just had surgery this past week to get final closure over the fracture site. It had become contaminated at the time she broke the leg. The fracture had to be stabilized and the wound left open to drain. Finally the infection cleared in the summer, then she was having wound stimulation dressings ( Jump Start by Arthrex ) in order to get the wound edges to heal by creeping overtop of the wound area. Once it was withi...n suturing parameters it was surgically closed. So far so good. Her Fractures have healed beautifully. This week is her first time in a long time shes been put back with some of the herd. She has started making friends with all the youngsters born this year. Its nice to see this interaction. Hopefully she will be out in the fields with everyone during our Farm/Mill tour weekends that start in June 2020. This year over 1,000 visitors attended our Farm tours and Gabby certainly enjoyed the excitement. Our Farm and Mill tours are open to all and free of charge. Hope to see everyone again next year. We only ask to not bring pets as Alpacas may get injured if they bolt and we have 3 large Great Pyrenees guard dogs, we would not want any of your pets injured. Its their job to protect the herd. Thank you. You can follow us on Facebook, Twin Pines Alpacas Farm and Fiber Mill. Joe.......( Dr. Muise )

What a nice day it is outside today, it would be perfect to go out and rake some leaves, maybe play ball with your dog? But did you know that ticks are still active and they are questing for their next meal right now! Adult blacklegged ticks are tiny, about the size of a sesame seed. These ticks hang out in fall leaves where your dog likes to play. One of our staff members stopped counting at 20 ticks she found crawling on her furbabies after a walk this past weekend! Luckily for them, she uses a tick preventative so those ticks didn't get a meal this time. Always do a tick check, not only on your pets but yourself as well after being outside.
