"Emotional, bossy, too nice"... the biases that still hold female leaders back - and how to overcome them. Basically, people become leaders iteratively: they should increasingly challenging roles, learn from mentors, and experiment with new behaviours. Then if their performance is affirmed, they repeat the process. Research shows that process is often more difficult for women than for men because of subtle biases. For example, behaviour considered assertive in a man is seen as aggressive in a woman and thus denigrated rather than rewarded. Moving forward, just naming those types of biases can help men and women alike to understand whats going on. That frees women to focus more on the leadership purpose and less on how theyre perceived! A friend told me about an amazing restaurant in Berkeley Calif., called "Karma Kitchen, a restaurant that will offer the meals for free with the hope that youll pay it forward by paying for the next guests bill! This practice is what is known as a gift economy. Could this EVER work in todays society - in businesses? "A gift economy is a mode of exchange where valuables are given without an explicit agreement for immediate or future rewards. In contrast to a barter economy or a market economy, social norms and custom govern gift exchange, rather than an explicit exchange of goods or services for money or some other commodity." http://spiritualityhealth.com/articles/karma-kitchen
One theory worth examining is that the market for legal services in Canada is actually growing, but that the lawyers share of this market is declining relative to non-lawyer providers. http://www.appliedstrategies.ca/documents/just_saying.php

So very sad at the death of cameraman the wonderful Mick Dean in Cairo. And when do "liberals" in Egypt start worrying about their new "road map" to democracy? Surely everyone knows you cant kill your way back to democracy.

"NO CANADIAN FIRMS ATTENDED!" The Managing Partner Forum 2013 Leadership Conference was last month in Atlanta. The conference was hosted by John Remsen Jr., president and CEO of The Managing Partner Forum. Karen MacKay, of Phoenix-Legal, and I were fortunate enough to be part of the faculty. Approximately 75 participants from 65 law firms (no Canadian firms attended) participated in the daylong session that began with an address by Aric Press, vice president and editor-in-chi...ef of American Lawyer Media. While Press presentation was very well done, the most memorable quote for me was about alternative fee arrangements, which he described as "the slowest damn revolution he has ever seen." The column provides the answers that the participants gave to a series of questions put to them the opening session. They responded using polling devices that allowed them to see the groups answers instantaneously. The rough demographics of the firms attending were: Less than 20 lawyers: 13 per cent 20-40 lawyers: 33 per cent 41-75 lawyers: 30 per cent 76-150 lawyers: 15 per cent More than 150 lawyers: eight per cent The column can be accessed by the following link: http://www.appliedstrategies.ca/documents/us-thinking.php
