PORT ALBERNI, BC --- Port Alberni RCMP’S Indigenous Policing Section will now be a little easier to spot. With the addition of new decals to three of the detachments marked vehicles, residents of Port Alberni and Nuu-Chah-Nulth Nations will better be able to distinguish members of the Port Alberni Indigenous Policing Section. The RCMP Indigenous Policing Program was developed to lead and bring proactive, culturally sensitive policing to Indigenous people and the communitie...s in which they live. The program aims to improve relations between Indigenous people, the RCMP and the Criminal Justice System. The Port Alberni Indigenous Policing Section has four positions funded under tripartite agreements to provide enhanced policing to Nuu-chah-nulth communities. With a focus on relationship building, visibility and ownership to the community and the people we serve, the Port Alberni Indigenous Policing Section is committed to a high standard of care and responsibilities, said Cpl. Jay Donahue, who leads the section. The decals are a ‘sign’ of respect and trust between the RCMP and the Indigenous communities it serves. Members of the Indigenous Policing Service work out of the Port Alberni RCMP Detachment and are regularly available Monday to Friday. For more information about the Port Alberni Indigenous Policing Section or to connect with its members, please contact 250-723-2424. See more

On February 15, 1965, Canada’s red and white maple leaf flag was raised for the very first time on Parliament Hill. On the same day in 1996, National Flag of Ca...nada Day was declared. Today, we celebrate our heritage and honour our Canadian flag as a symbol that unites all Canadians and reflects the common values we hold equality, diversity and inclusion. Happy National Flag of Canada Day! Meanwhile, here in BC, it’s also Family Day and we want to wish everyone in all our communities across the province a happy Family Day from our BC RCMP family to yours! #FamilyDay #NationalFlagOfCanadaDay #CanadianFlag #CanadianSymbol #CanadianIcon #RedAndWhite #MapleLeaf #Canada #OCanada #NationalDay #ProvincialHoliday #Families #Mountie #YourBCRCMP #BCRCMP

The spirit of the holidays is a time of giving for most but, for scammers, it is a time of taking. We are highlighting 12 Days of Holiday Scams so that you can ...recognize, reject, report and be merry. DAY 8: PRIZE NOTIFICATIONS can be received through any method of communication. Typically, you are notified that you have won millions of dollars and a fancy vehicle. The fraudster will want to confirm your details and then start asking you for payments to cover the taxes, insurance, shipping and others fees. Remember: You cannot win a draw you never entered. You can only purchase a lottery ticket from another country from within that country. In Canada, there are no upfront fees on prize winnings. With schools back in session, it may be helpful to review laws concerning passing school buses. Many motorists are unaware of the penalties for passing stopped school buses, despite the efforts to raise awareness, some drivers still fail to stop. Before stopping a school bus for picking up or letting off children, a bus driver is required to activate amber flashing signal lamps. Once the bus comes to a complete stop, the bus driver is required to extend the stop arm and activ...ate the red flashing signal lights prior to opening the door of the bus. If a school bus is stopped to pick up or let out passengers with the stop arm and signal lights activated, drivers must stop whether the bus is oncoming or you are behind the bus. Vehicles shall not proceed until the bus has completely let out or picked up all passengers, shut down its lights and is moving. Penalties: In BC, the offence penalty for illegally passing school buses is $368, and it increases dramatically after that. Drivers will continue to receive three penalty points on top of the fine. All Port Alberni busses are equipped with high resolution cameras capturing photos of vehicles passing stopped busses illegally. These photos are being used by local police as evidence in order to issue violation tickets to the registered owner of the vehicle in question. See more
