Acupuncture is proven to decrease inflammation, increase circulation and release muscle tension. Pain, the top condition we see in clinical practice. A pinched nerve, a tweaked neck or lower back, headache, migraine, neck pain, back pain, sprained ankle, jaw ache ect... all we feel is pain. Pain is debilitating, not only physically, but mentally as well.... The conscious mind can only hold one thought at a time, so if we are in constant pain, how are we supposed to effectively focus on anything else completely? This is why pain is so debilitating, it takes over and that’s all we feel and think about. From my years of experience, acupuncture is singly one of the most effective modalities at decreasing pain and preventing it from coming back all together. By inserting an acupuncture needle into the tissue (skin, tendon, muscle, ligament, fascia), it stimulate an immune response. By triggering this process, your body will naturally send oxygenated blood to the location of that needle (where the pain and injury is). Oxygenated blood is required to heal and repair tissue. The lymphatic system, which is part of the immune system, is also stimulated to move fluid (swelling) through that area. This decreases the inflammation and irritation in that area. Inflammation (swelling, redness and heat) is the main reason why someone has pain. Inflammation irritates the nerves and soft tissues and puts pressure on them, leading to pain. Acupuncture removes the inflammation and brings fresh blood flow to the area to repair the damaged or injured tissue. For example, this is kind of like when you get a sliver in your finger, it’s instantly red and irritated. It doesn’t mean that its instantly infected, it just means your immune system has identified that sliver as a foreign object and its trying to heal the tissue and prevent infection. Blood flow and lymphatic fluid is circulated. An acupuncture needle stimulates this same process. Except, we’re using a sterilized single use stainless steel needle as opposed to a dirt sliver. Acupuncture can also reset a muscle to bring it back to it normal length and strength- decreasing muscle tension.

How do you know when you need a massage vs. when you need an acupuncture treatment? Simply put, if you’re in alot of pain, massage will usually aggravate your symptoms, especially if it’s involving a pinched nerve. Massage Therapy is a great tool for releasing moderate muscle tension and soothing chronic conditions. It’s also a fantastic maintenance tool to keep you feeling your best. Massage therapy calms the nervous system and increases circulation, all of which promote h...ealing. For the acute pain patient- someone who has had a recent flare up of their chronic condition or, someone whose just tweaked their neck/lower back or sprained their ankle. Inflammation is the common denominator when it comes to acute pain. What is inflammation, exactly? Inflammation means there is swelling, heat and redness around the tissue. The reason acupuncture is so great at decreasing pain immediately is because it decreases inflammation! The needles do this by stimulating your immune system to identify that needle as a foreign object entering the body. When this happens, our immune system is triggered to heal and repair that area by sending fresh oxygenated blood to the area (which is essential for healing). The lymphatic system is also stimulated to move fluid through that area (this decreases swelling- inflammation). During this acute phase of the pain cycle, acupuncture treatment is advised 2x per week for 2 weeks or until the patient is relatively pain free. The patient also must be careful in their daily activities to avoid re-aggravating the symptom again. Following the advise and home care recommended by the acupuncturist at this time is essential. A patient experiencing chronic pain or chronic muscle tension: - if you are new to receiving acupuncture, treatment 1-2 x per week for 2 weeks is recommended to help our body adjust to the treatment and the tissue changes we are promoting. - Once your body is feeling good, maintenance treatments once every 4-6 weeks is suggested to maintain the progress we’ve made while still following home care exercises. #acutepain #acutepainmanagement #chronicpain #chronicpainrelief #acupunctureforpain #painfree #selfcare
