Practitioner of the Week ~ Stefanie Iverson, MC RCC When I first sit down with clients and listen to their stories, and what brought them in to my office, it can feel like the floodgates have opened and a rapid fire of struggles/concerns fill the space. As they speak, I #holdthespace and I try to gather as much information in a short period of time as possible. Oftentimes, there are many moving parts, many variables, many things that have built up over the course of time tha...t have led them to this point in time. At the end of our first session many clients will feel #overwhelmed. Who wouldn't be?! When you step back and try to tackle everything at once it IS overwhelming! It's impossible! So where do we begin? We start with the first step. We start with what the client feels is important, but also something that feels #attainable in a relatively short period of time. Something that will help the client feel success, and we build from there. After a few sessions we revisit the client's list of concerns, struggles, and/or challenges. I have them evaluate how things have changed from that first initial meeting. To their surprise not only have the initial concerns begun to improve, but other areas have also improved seemingly simultaneously! The long list of problems that once felt overwhelming and unattainable suddenly feels shorter. And while we may have not reached a point of full resolution after a few sessions, we have begun to foster change, and clients feel #empowered.
