Reading with Your Kids - Grade 6 to 8 Hello, Universe by Erin Entrada Kelly 2017 Newbery Medal Winner 2018 Four children: ... * One has a pair of smart and cheerful twin brothers * One can’t hear * One believes she can see the future * One is the bully in the neighbourhood * * * * These four kids with very different heritages, abilities, personalities, and strengths, live in the same community, but don’t know each other. It could be a coincidence; it could be faith; or it could be a supernatural power. The lives of these four kids got tangled around a dried-up well in a wood. Hello, Universe begins around a Philipino family settled in the United States and quickly extends its storyline into a Japanese home. In our multicultural society in North America, it is still very rare to find children literature centered around non-white, non-black, and non-indigenous characters. For this reason alone, I can’t put the book down once I found out that characters in the story share similar heritages as mine. HelloUniverse As a first generation immigrant to Canada during my teenage years, I continue to be fascinated by stories with characters from different heritages. I like reading about how kids from different countries react to their parents, grandparents, cultures, traditions, and expectations. Through these stories, we may realize that our experience as Chinese immigrants is not at all that unique. Our neighbours and classmates around us all come with different life experiences and struggles. Reading about ‘their’ experience helped us connect, grow, and build with our larger society. Hello, Universe offers a simple story of four children, narrated by different characters with different voices and perspectives. I hope your children will find as much resonance in this book as I do. HelloUniverse Please share books that resonate with your culture and background. I look forward to learning and reading more books beyond the traditional class reading lists.

Due to Covid, many high schools in BC are adapting a quarterly system, when English and communication skills are only taught in short bursts of time during the academic year. Parents need to find a system to help our kids practice their writing skill throughout the year.
