WANTED: Can you loan us or give us a used chest freezer, to store meals for community members in need between prep and delivery? Even a short-term loan until September would be a big help, given the number of meals that our kitchen team is producing! Thank you!... The Red Cedar Caf
Volunteers are still in daily chopping and cooking, and were still sending out 1000+ frozen meals a week to those in need. But weve been quiet over here lately following the loss of our friend and chef Jerson Hernandez. As Eric, a friend of Jersons and volunteer at the cafe put so well: You refused to do things rushed, and you were bored by anything without meaning. You truly saw beauty and love in this world, and shared it with everyone through your cooking, your music, ...and your heartwarming laughter We all miss you Jerson. And send all of our love and thoughts out to your family RIP
REQUEST We are looking for CHEST FREEZERS and FLOWERING PLANTS to support the operations of our not-for-profit community meal program. Please direct message us or email [email protected] if you can help. Thank you!
Wow! In just 10 hours weve hit $2000 raised from 24 donors. Thank you! Can you help us keep the momentum building by sharing this post and making a donation if youre able? Red Cedar Caf serves 10,000th free meal, launches fundraising campaign June 25, 2020 Victoria, BCThe Red Cedar Caf, the not-for-profit community meal program founded in April 2020 in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, has served its 10,000th free meal today and launched a community fundraising campaign for $50,000 to support the next 3 months of operations.... We have served 10,000 free meals in less than 3 months of operations, fueled by volunteers and mutual aid, says Liz Maze, a volunteer and Community Relations Coordinator with the Red Cedar Caf. We are heartened by this tremendous outpouring of community solidarity. To continue operating preparing and delivering healthy, tasty meals to people in need during a potential second wave of the pandemic we are calling on the community to mobilize support to help cover $50,000 in operating expenses for the next 3 months. The fundraising goal is for expenses including rent and utilities for the kitchen / distribution centre at 537 Johnson Street (the former Willies Bakery); healthy ingredients to supplement donated food; and bare-bones labour costs for supervisory positions in cooking and distribution. Founded in April 2020 by hospitality industry professionals and community leaders to respond to the pandemic and associated economic hardship, the Red Cedar Caf has scaled up from 200 meals per week in April to more than 1,200 meals this week. The program enlists 230 volunteers and partnerships with organizations including Khalsa Aid Canada, Fairway Market, Saanich Organics, TopSoil, Whole Foods, the Food Share Network, the Topaz Avenue and Cecelia Road Gurdwaras, Cobs Bakery (Oak Bay Avenue and Helmcken), Irenes Bakery, Bows & Arrows Coffee Roasters, the Quadra Village Community Centre, the Fairfield-Gonzales Community Association and the Fernwood Neighbourhood Resources Group. Healthy meals are prepared and distributed to seniors, people in self-isolation, the unhoused and other community members in need. This includes residents of social housing operated by BC Housing, the Victoria Cool Aid Society, Pacifica Housing and the Portland Hotel Society, buoyed by referrals from agencies including the Vancouver Island Health Authority and Esquimalt First Nation. To contribute funds to help the Red Cedar Caf meet its fundraising goal for the next 3 months and continue serving people in need, please visit and share this link: https://www.gofundme.com/f/keep-the-lights-on-at-red-cedar-
Weve reached a big milestone today -- serving 10,000 free, healthy meals to community members in need! Now, we are calling on the community to mobilize support to help cover $50,000 in operating expenses for the next 3 months. Please contribute what you can and share widely through your networks! Much appreciated :)... Come by for breakfast and help support us getting 1000 meals a week out to those in need right now. From our community: "Greetings dear Red Cedar Cafe staff, I would first like to thank you all for offering this beautiful gift of providing wonderful tasty meals to us. It is obvious to me you all are doing this from your heart. For my partner of 25 years and I it has meant so much. It has especially made my life so much less stressful. My spouses health took a turn three... years ago and daily life and caretaking has been on my shoulders and as the healing processes takes time it can as you can imagine takes its toll. So having the relief of less shopping and meal planning has really taken a load off my shoulders, not to mention the burden that has eased in the financial department, as you know being financially dependant on Government is quite challenging at times, especially for seniors such as ourselves. Thank you all for caring, we are enjoying your wonderful meals very much." See more
What an awesome distribution day today! Thanks to all the kitchen and delivery volunteers who made it happen. More than 900 meals delivered to 300 households, including 130 meals to the unhoused population of the city and more than 50 meals to residents of supportive housing operated by the Portland Hotel Society, Pacific Housing and the Victoria Cool Aid Society. Step by step, were improving access to healthy, tasty food for community members in need.
I just ate my first meal, curry butter chicken. It is fabulous. So tasty it just melted in my mouth. Thank you so much for a wonderful meal. I so look forward to eating my other meals with anticipation. Thank you to all of you who prepare and deliver this great food. Blessing to you all and yours.
A big thank you to Bows & Arrows Coffee for providing fresh-roasted coffee for home delivery to people in need though our not-for-profit community meal program!!
