With so much disconnection in families, homes and relationships we need to be aware of the effects of trauma on our babies. These are far reaching and impact the brain very biologically. How do we treat trauma in our kiddos? Love, connection, consistency, safety. Kent Hoffman is one of my favourite clinicians. He and his colleagues created a program called The Circle of Security which I highly recommended taking. There is also a parent book called Raising a Secure Child.

These are my girls’ rooms... a great reflection of their personalities. Neither one better, more desirable or right/wrong. Just different. I have one daughter who is organized, forward thinking, intentional, planned and calculated. And I have one who lives in the moment, prioritizes fun and things she loves to do, a free spirit, speaks her mind and doesn’t over think things. Parenting is tough work for this reason. I feel like I should have been given 2 damn manuals when I left the hospital! But I have learned and I teach that fair doesn’t mean everyone gets the same thing. Fair means that everyone gets what they need. Some of our babies might need more pushing and direction and others may need us to pull back the reins a little bit.

Today is world suicide prevention day. If anything is going to be my fight this is it. Just days ago we lost a young girl in our province to suicide after being bullied by her peers. The anguish of her family is unbearable to watch. Today I sat in my office with a girl of the same age contemplating the same thing for the very same reason. My words only last a moment in a life of a teen where her social circle is her world right now. ... When we say it takes a village to raise a child this cannot be more true. It is now where we model to our children acceptance, kindness, compassion and love. Where we model the strength to stand up in our social circle and say to our friends not cool. It is TODAY that you sit down with your child and talk very specifically about how they can recognize signs of distress and isolation in their peers, what they can say when they see someone being bullied (both to the people engaging in it and to the victim) and what we can say to our very own friends who we see do this to others. How we can show compassion for someone who is hurting. Have the conversation about what bullying is... it is not just aggression or unkind words. It is joking, commenting on clothes or hair, teasing, laughing, leaving others out on purpose, pitting peers against people, talking behind others backs, and staying silent and allowing these things to happen. It is also being blind to the fact and refusing to see that your child may be engaging in this. Humans need love, connection and acceptance. Every single one of us. Leading cause of death in children 10-14 right now.... suicide. Have the conversation.

Free Fridays are back! Free Fridays are to provide assessment/diagnosis and a full report to children with behavioural or developmental concerns. Right now our economy is hurting and wait lists for free services through Alberta health are 12-18 months. 12-18 months is too long for parents who are struggling and children that need assistance. Full assessment costs range from $1500-$2400 which is way out of reach for many families. If you know a family that requires assessmen...t for their child and could use some assistance please refer them here. Please keep in mind that this is for families that currently do not have insurance benefits and are in financial need. Please email: [email protected]
