Let’s talk about flattening this curve too!
I've been struggling to write this post for awhile. I've been angered by some posts I've read and I wanted to wait until I was able to write something that is hopefully more inspiring and uplifting. Canada needs businesses to step up right now. We can do this together. https://www.royeraccounting.ca/covid-19-a-war-on-two-fronts/

OK, I know I said I'd be posting COVID-19 information to my Facebook page and to join there for updates, but I'm finding the formatting and sharing options too limited to keep up. So I've just created a group. Please join the group to hear more updates. Just posted a great resource with more details on the 75% subsidy that I got from Wagepoint today.
I've had several people ask me about the wage subsidy for businesses and I've been silent because we just didn't have the details. I still have questions, but Bill Morneau gave more details today, so I wanted to provide a summary of my understanding. Things may (and will) still change. The previously announced 10% subsidy is not being replaced by the 75% subsidy. The 10% subsidy is for all businesses that qualify. This was previously announced to only be for corporations, bu...t this now applies to any eligible employer. More details on this subsidy are here: https://www.canada.ca//frequently-asked-questions-wage-sub The 75% wage subsidy will be available through a CRA portal to register and will be functional within a few weeks. Funding will take another 6 weeks. Businesses that can are encouraged to hire back employees at 100% of their salary. Business will have to prove a 30% decrease in revenue due to the virus. This will be based on revenue in the same month of the prior year and you will need to re-apply for March, April, and May. They are still working on the details on how different scenarios may be able to prove the 30%. Morneau alluded that a startup may be able to use prior months rather than the prior year. I also hope they will add language to allow a business that has grown significantly over the prior year to be able to prove a drop. More details to follow as I have them. Please let me know if you have any questions and I'll do my best to answer them. If you want to know about other measures ask away. We want to do our part to help others. We only get through this together as a community! To my accounting friends, please let me know if I've misstated anything here.
Effective immediately we are only able to accept deliveries between 9:30am and 4pm.
Just goes to show that people can be terrible in the best and worst of times. Unbelievable.
Koren Palmer and I did a basic strategy session on what steps small business owners can take to mitigate the effects of COVID-19. Hopefully this is helpful. Let me know in the comments if this is helpful, what questions you have, and if you want to see more of these.
I was a little hesitant to share this at first. I dislike seeing some posts excited about "free" money. The government doesn't have money, it redistributes the money we give to it. So asking for more from the government means expecting tax payers to fork out more in the future. Having said that, in this case I do think there is an unfair burden being placed on some small business owners more than others. Some are forced to close, some are slowing and some are minimally affect...ed. We need to come together to help one another and share the burden. Please consider signing. https://savesmallbusiness.ca/petition/
Does your insurance plan have business interruption insurance? If you’ve had to close your doors, check with your insurance plan to see if you can get some relief.
BDC loans may be available to assist businesses struggling at this time due to COVID-19. Please contact your financial institution first for support on delaying loan payments or additional loans. The financial institution may then refer you to BDC. https://www.bdc.ca/en/pages/special-support.aspx
Our bookkeeping and tax practice has been almost entirely virtual since the beginning. This means that we can meet with clients virtually, collect documentation, file returns and send reports without the need to meet in person. During this time we're asking all our clients to please submit your documents through the client portal. Please give us a call if you need help doing so. If you absolutely need to drop off paperwork, you can still do so at reception. This year after your tax return is complete we'll send you a video going over your return. If you have any questions after you watch the video feel free to give us a call.
We now have until June 1st to file and pay your personal tax returns. However, with all the uncertainty out there, we still recommend getting this filed as quickly as you can. https://nationalpost.com//government-extends-tax-deadline-
