Waking up for an early sunrise is always a difficult thing. But I knew I would regret my decision to stay in my nice warm bed and not get out and chase some fall colours. So, to counter this, I called on a friend. Thankfully, he was interested in heading out, so we committed to getting up early and heading for Wascana Trails. The forecast was for cloud cover most of the morning which, based on what I wanted to photograph, was not a bad thing. It creates a flat light which is ...fantastic for creating more abstract images. So, I was looking forward to seeing what I could find. As we started our hike, I could see an odd "character" tree or two mixed with the younger trees with vibrant foliage. So when this tree came into full view, I was more than happy to see it. Instantly, I knew I needed to make an image of it. I had an idea then that it would be one of my favourite images of the year. www.scottaspinall.com/calendar

The 2021 calendar is now available for pre-sale. Over the next several days I will be sharing some of the images that made the cut. I realize that many of you aren't calendar people. Lots of us use technology to manage our calendar. That doesn't change how important this calendar is to me. It represents a year of hard work, thousands of miles travelled and hundreds of hours. My goal each year is to have 12 images that are good enough to not only share on a digital platform bu...t good enough to hang in someone's home. That's why it is important to me. It is a goal for each year. If you're new or you've been around for a while and you enjoy the photos I share I'd appreciate you showing your support by considering purchasing a calendar. Whether its because you need a calendar or you just want some nice wall art that changes every month, I deeply appreciate any of you who want to support me in this way . Link in the comments. I'll kick it off with something relevant, September! This was one of the coolest experiences of the year and why nature photography is so addictive. To set up a shot and have 4 deer wander through this pristine scene certainly put a massive smile on my face. It reminds me that stuff like this is happening at every minute of every day, whether humans witness it or not. It points to the grandness of the natural world and something bigger than ourselves. I hope you enjoy this one.

Land of the Living Skies 2 is now live on YouTube (https://youtu.be/kVsDFjjuzxU)! 6 minutes of timelapse clips in 4K resolution accompanied by the music of Edgar Hopp. Another summer of storm chasing, another timelapse film. I learned a lot from making last year's film and I'm happy to say that I actually managed to timelapse the big supercells this year (as opposed to last year). I hope you enjoy the full film and this short little trailer :)!

Haven't shot anything in several weeks after spending most of August working. Managed to get a couple of days camping with the family in Cypress Hills a couple weeks back and we took the long road home. When I spotted this little scene I slammed the brakes on and jumped out, running up and down the road trying to align the cloud perfectly with the tree, much to my families enjoyment. Never a dull moment

Change of pace from the recent storm focus to some dried mud at sunset captured with friends. Have a good weekend folks!

I photographed this mothership supercell on US Independence Day, July 4th. Coincidence? I think not!

Would you live here?

If you haven't already, make sure you look to the northern horizon to see Comet NEOWISE over the next few days. From after sunset until sunrise it will track northwest to the northeast (in Saskatchewan). If you're outside the city lights, you can see it unaided with the naked eye. Or bring binoculars, it's quite a sight!

NEW TUTORIAL A couple months ago, when I had more time than I do now, I decided to create a "Nothing to Something" Photoshop tutorial. The goal was to create a complete Photoshop tutorial that covered absolutely everything I knew how to do in Photoshop. To turn something with zero visual impact into something that would stop the scroll. So in this tutorial I've covered: focus stacking, creative warping, dodging and burning using luminosity masks, light bleeds, Orton effect, shaping light, and colour theory in an hour and forty minutes of content. I'm excited to get it out to you guys today with a discount code! Use 'social25' to get 25% off any of my tutorials, including this new one. Link is here (www.scottaspinall.com/photoshop-tutorials) if you're interested! Hope you enjoy :)

Living in Saskatchewan, the Canadian province that's thought to be flat as a pancake (known affectionately by non-residents as 'the gap'), makes nature photography tough. Once in a while though, I manage to drag myself out, like last weekend, and take some pictures of this dull and boring landscape. When I go out, it's usually a struggle to find something interesting though, but here are some of the pics from this week's video. I know I know, pretty boring and lifeless. I wish I lived in a place with dynamic light and a diverse landscape. Oh well, c'est la vie! (Sarcastic Post ) https://youtu.be/xdbgWkqd6d4

Several months ago I shared this photo (This is after/before). When I posted it, I received lots of messages from folks that wanted to know how I processed it. I've finally found time to put a processing video together on it. You can find the video AND a link to download the RAW file so you can work along here: https://youtu.be/CW82sYqFIME . Video length: ~24 minutes

Photoshop gets a bad rap these days, and a debate rages about the realism or accuracy of a photograph, begging the question, can we trust that photograph? I’ll also talk through some ideas to help you focus on the narrative for your landscape photography. Hopefully, by the end of the video, you are able to come up with guidelines for yourself, both in the field and when post processing, that will help you find freedom and focus in your landscape photography. https://youtu.be/K2LE-ZJ5lPM

I hope you're all well in these interesting times. I thought some of you could use a reprieve so here are three photos I got a few days ago. If you'd be curious to catch the 'behind-the-scenes video' of this shoot, and maybe kill some time ;) That's here: https://youtu.be/xPkM7oWxDb8
