In 1993, Wayne Adams became Nova Scotia’s first Black Cabinet Minister. He served as Minister of Environment where a major accomplishment was the introduction of the first comprehensive solid waste resource management strategy in Canada, designed to reduce the amount of solid waste being generated in Nova Scotia by more than 50% within two years. #themoreyouknow #AfricanHeritageMonth Listen. In 1783, 3,500 free #BlackLoyalists arrived in #NovaScotia. This was the first major group of Black settlers in our province. #themoreyouknow #AfricanHeritageMonth Credit to: https://ansa.novascotia.ca/african-heritage-month A lot of great information on this site. Listen. Learn. Share. Act.

The gratitude we're feeling right now is enormous! When Mayor Mike's office came to us a few weeks ago with his #StuffIt2020 challenge idea, we thought it was brilliant. Local supporting local = a beautiful thing. Well it seems you all agree. Look at this total!!!!!! #grateful To everyone who bid on these stockings, to all the businesses who contributed and to the donors who gave "just because." THANK YOU!! We live in a very special city. #HomesForAll Halifax Regional Municipality

Surprise present delivery The generosity of the community so far this season, including the amazing support from Safety Services Nova Scotia has allowed us to gift over 300 goodie bags containing gift cards to our trustee and housing clients. #giftofchoice #community #itsthelittlethings

It’s #NationalHousingDay. Yesterday, we released a joint statement with our colleagues bringing to light the #housingcrisis. It’s real & needs action. But, today, we also want to celebrate our two supportive affordable housing buildings & the people who live & work there #homesforall These buildings ended years and years of homelessness. We need more of these. Homes, not shelters.

With COVID, we've had to limit all in-kind donations for safety precautions, however; the need is stronger than ever. Each year, we typically receive thousands of dollars’ worth of in-kind donations, specifically personal care items. Please help us, help our guests feel cared for and as comfortable as possible. Donate here: https://www.shelternovascotia.com/contribute

Tim Nobes is a "retired" construction guy. He found us five years ago and we're grateful every day! Thank you Tim. If you have money, share it. If you have time, give it. #TogetherWeCan #Gratitude https://www.thechronicleherald.ca//john-demont-how-the-sn/

Today is special. We hosted a socially distanced tea party at our community residential facility, Nehiley House. We celebrated and said "THANK YOU" to a very special lady, Margot Spafford. Margot contributed funds to Shelter Nova Scotia, enabling us to make significant renovations to Nehiley House. Nehiley House is for individuals who identify as female and trans individuals. We help our residents make the change from a correctional facility to community living. Now, because of her generosity, our residents have a more dignified space to call their own. To learn more about Nehiley House and our other five facilities, please visit www.shelternovascotia.com

Our Adopt-a-Meal (the weekend edition) program is back! (More info here - https://www.shelternovascotia.com/a/volunteer-opportunities) Thank you so much to Cox & Palmer for arranging the most amazing meal for all six of our facilities (over 100 hungry mouths fed.) The meal was donated by the German Embassy in celebration of the 30th anniversary of German Unity Day (October 3, 1990.) Normally, the German Consulates throughout Canada host celebratory receptions, but with COVI...D restrictions, the receptions were cancelled and the budget redirected to local shelters across the Country. Danke schön and Alles Gute zum Tag der Deutschen Einheit! #givingback #GermanUnityDay #adoptameal

Over $6,000 was raised through Halifax Harbourside Rotary’s first ever raffle box 50/50 draw. Thanks so much to everyone who bought a ticket to support the important work we do. We wouldn’t be here for our community without the help of our community

Who is Shelter Nova Scotia? We are six facilities throughout HRM. One is this beauty right here. Established in 2012, The Rebuilding, is a supportive apartment building, helping tenants transition from shelter to community living. 19 wonderful humans call this place home, one of whom even named the building, stating, everyone here is rebuilding their lives. www.shelternovascotia.com #SupportiveHousing

Shelter Nova Scotia is more than just six facilities. Did you know we also offer a community trustee program? This program offers men & women help in maintaining their housing and improving their financial literacy skills. We accomplish this by paying landlords directly on behalf of clients and teaching them how to budget effectively. Sometimes we even have a little extra to offer Here's Cassandra & Shannon passing out food packs today.

Look for our bus shelter ads scattered throughout the city. Please snap a pic, tag us and add the location. We love hearing from our community. Huge thanks to Outfront Media for donating the space & to Trampoline and Jive Photography for donating their creativity ignoring the problem won’t cure the problem. #affordablehousingforall

These are the "helpers" that we speak of. They are everywhere. Look for them and you will find them. These twin girls are collecting packs for "people without a home" for their birthday, instead of gifts. Check out their initiative here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=osMWB9aWPg0&feature=youtu.be Thank you Rori & Georgia
