As promised: Hutsul wedding preparations part II.
Hlechyk (jug) - one of the earliest and most widely spread forms of Ukrainian earthenware.
From William Jula: Hutsul ethnomagic in the photographs of Henryk Poddembski, taken in Kosiv in 1936 and 1938. The photos were taken at the market on a summer day in 1936, and on the feast of St. John in 1938.
Vytynanka (paper cutting) - the art of creating intricate paper designs using scissors or a knife blade.
This is part I of a video on Hutsul weddings. Part II will be posted soon. You don't need to know Ukrainian to enjoy the beautiful and dynamic sights and sounds.
Batik - an ancient method of surface decoration on fabric using wax resist and dyes.
The day of the Ukrainian written word and language falls on November the 9th. To celebrate this, the National Museum of Ukrainian Decorative Folk Art has created an "Alphabet of Decorative Art" (Abetka dekoratyvnoho mystetstva). The posted items will usually begin with the next letter of the Ukrainian alphabet. In some cases, it will appear somewhere in the spelling of the word. The explanations in Ukrainian are very interesting but rather long. Therefore, we will keep our English translations brief. The first word is Avtoportret (self-portrait). Here we see the self-portrait in pencil on paper (1950) of the Ukrainian visual artist, Kateryna Bilokur. More information including her paintings can be found in earlier posts on the Shevchenko Museum's page.
Nazar Chornoshlychnyk posted that he is feeling blissful for having recently played bandura at the Taras Shevchenko House-Museum in Kyiv. This is how he describes the surroundings: "There is a high bush cranberry (kalyna) near the house. Inside, an ancient kilim, and Shevchenko's personal shirt (not a copy) with white embroidery on the collar. The performance took place near Shevchenko's paint brushes and other artist's material".
