As immigration and refugee lawyers we're often told not get emotionally attached to our client's files. This time, I broke this rule. This morning, after month...s of material preparation and record building, the Board Member at the Refugee Protection Division made her positive decision in 20 minutes. The room broke out in tears and cheers of joy. I connected with my client while volunteering at a pro-bono legal clinic in Calgary, AB. Upon hearing her story, I was shocked that she hadn't made a claim for refugee protection in Canada. At this time, she was in the country for 4 years already. She left a very dark corner of a central African country. She and her family were targeted because of their ethnicity, and because of her being a woman. She lost her parents at a young age due to civil war. She was abandoned by her spouse upon landing in the country, and lived in and out of shelters in the city; all while trying to figure out her immigration and fight for custody for her kids. Financially, she relied on social support and portioning off funds from a child tax benefit to save up for immigration filing fees. Today, on her 5 year anniversary in Canada, she gets to show the country what she's made of. #immigration #immigrationlaw #canadaimmigration #refugeelaw #Canada
