Fire prevention week is held this week in October in recognition of the Great Chicago Fire. The Great Chicago Fire was a conflagration that burned in the American city of Chicago during October 810, 1871. The fire killed approximately 300 people, destroyed roughly 3.3 square miles of the city, and left more than 100,000 residents homeless. The aftermath of this fire was the beginning of many improvements such as building codes, many advancements in the fire service, and industrial fire safety. https://youtu.be/VZhvbmqYniA
Need something to entertain the kids today? Why not do something you keep saying you are going to do, and never seem to take the time for? Plan and practice your home escape plan, talk to your family about fire safety! This short video will get you started on the right path....
Parents... we need your help! We want your children to get acquainted with how a firefighter looks and sounds when they have their gear on, so that in the event of a fire they are not scared by us, and know to come to us for help! We've made a short video with Sparky and Firefighter Rumas. Get your children to watch and discuss with them what to do in the event of a fire, let them hear what a smoke alarm sounds like, and practice your home escape plan! Teach them where your meeting place is so that everyone can meet outside the home and call 911. Give your children the skills they will need to escape, if a fire strikes your home! https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=578380229773515

Happily, I havent had to mow my lawn in a few weeks since its burnt brown now.....BUT This time of year it become super important we pay close attention to where cigarette butts are disposed of! Dry grass and mulch burn very easily in this hot weather. Always dispose of cigarette butts in a non-combustible container....never toss them into the grass, gardens or off your balconies.
Its a hot one out there... Keep an eye on your neighbours and family with no air conditioning.
Wishing everyone a safe and happy Canada Day!
Canada Day means fireworks for a lot of families! Since there will be no big displays this year due to COVID restrictions there are some things we need you to remember if you choose to light off a few for the family.... *Responsible, sober adults are the only ones who should be lighting fireworks! ... *Fireworks may not be set off in public parks, roadways or city green spaces. *Never try to relight a dud, submerse in a pail of water for 15 minutes *Read and follow the directions and NEVER light them while holding them in your hand. *Always purchase your home fireworks from a licensed supplier. Illegal fireworks can be dangerous, of poor quality and can cause injury. 94.1 myFM City of St. Thomas, Ontario Joe Preston - Mayor ST.Thomas Ontario Medavie EMS Elgin Ontario
