Protect your collector. Place your Green Bin, garbage and recycling where it can be clearly seen and safely collected this winter. Keep a path from the road to your collectibles clear of snow and ice. Choose a safe and visible ground-level location on the right side at the end of your driveway or walkway (as you face the street), or on the boulevard closest to the curb. Large snowbanks? Shovel a ground-level shelf in the street side of the snowbank for your collectibles. Never place them on snowbanks where they will be risky to collect. Safe placement helps avoid worker injury. Notice to boaters in the Cataraqui River. The Kingston Mills Locks has closed for the season. Since its’ closure, there is no longer marine passage available up the Rideau Canal through the locks. This, coupled with temperatures, have reduced the amount of boat traffic that is in the area of the Third Crossing. The City has been granted permission from Federal Agencies to lower the Third Crossong's temporary lift span over the navigation channel to a ‘DOWN’ position starting... November 1. This means some boats will no longer pass through the Third Crossing construction site. The lift span will be operable during the winter months for emergency situations when required. And small craft such as kayaks, small motorboats, and rowing shells can still pass underneath the lowered lift span. Email the project team with any questions and find more information at https://thirdcrossing.cityofkingston.ca/

Police urge social responsibility and self-accountability this coming weekend Release Date: October 15, 2020 On any given previous year tomorrow would have sign...aled the start of a long honoured tradition, Queen’s Homecoming weekend. This year, unlike any year before it, has spelled the end to what Kingstonians perceive as normal due to Ontario being in the midst of the current COVID-19 pandemic. This year Kingston Police is working with the City of Kingston, Queens University, KFL&A Public Health and other Community Partners to help ensure the safety of our community and its citizens this weekend. Kingston Police has scheduled an additional contingent of officers to work throughout the weekend to ensure frontline patrol can adequately respond to their regular calls for service throughout the city. Our priority is the safety of our community during this pandemic and significant enforcement tools have been provided by the province to ensure that members of the public are abiding by current rules and restrictions. As the public is now well aware there are limits to the number of individuals that can gather both inside and in outdoor spaces. No more than 10 people can gather inside a residence and no more than 25 can gather outdoors. A minimum fine of $10,000 can be issued under the ROA (Reopening Ontario Act) to any host or organizer of a gathering that exceeds the specified numbers of individuals permitted. Additionally, under the ROA, guests and participants at locations that are found to be in contravention of the act can be issued a fine of $880. Anyone participating in activities contravening the current regulations should expect substantial penalties as a consequence of poor choices and behaviour. Aside from provincial emergency orders Kingston Police will also continue to enforce liquor licence violations and nuisance party and noise bylaws, with penalties ranging from $100 up to $2,000. Kingston Police and its partners are hopeful that members of the public take the increasing number of those infected throughout the province with COVID-19 seriously and do their part in helping to reduce the unnecessary spread of the virus within our community. #QueensHomecoming #QueensU @QueensYGKAlumni @QueensAMS @cityofkingston #ygk

Extreme cold puts everyone at risk however, the risks are greater for young children, older adults, people with chronic illnesses, people working or exercising outdoors, and those without proper shelter. Adverse health effects can occur as a direct result of exposure to excessive cold such as hypothermia and frostbite. Here are some tips from the City’s Emergency Management Office to keep you and others safe in extreme cold: -If you must go outside, cover up and dress warmly ...with several layers. The outer layer should be wind resistant. Frostbite can develop within minutes to exposed skin, especially with wind chill. -Avoid overexertion when shovelling snow and take several breaks. -Check on older family, friends and neighbors. -Bring pets inside and move livestock to sheltered areas with non-frozen drinking water. Know a Snow Angel? Show your appreciation! Snow Angels are people who notice when neighbours may need help keeping a driveway, a stretch of sidewalk or a catch basin clear of snow and ice and decide to do it for them. They may not seek reward or acknowledgement, but we know they deserve to be appreciated! To learn how to nominate your Snow Angel, visit: https://bit.ly/1orfEoQ
