In honour of national love your pet day, we wanted to share this throwback CBC interview with Nicole and Ellie from 2017 It was filmed in our original location... so much has changed since then! A new space and our team has grown +3. She’ll likely never be able to hang out with us in office again (we’ll be following our new protocols indefinitely), but we’re always working on innovative ways to help our clients access a dental hygienist and feel more relaxed at their visits...! How lucky are we to have great memories like this one?! Share a favourite pic of your pet in the comment section below to brighten someone else’s day https://www.cbc.ca//dental-hygienist-dog-therapy-anxiety-d

February is HEART month! Did you know that keeping your oral health in check can reduce your chance of heart disease? While a cause-and-effect relationship has not yet been proven, research has indicated that periodontal disease can increase a person’s risk of heart disease by 2-3 times! How? Bacteria associated with gingivitis, periodontitis and other oral infections can enter the bloodstream and wreak havoc in other parts of your body (including your heart, lungs, brain, r...eproductive organs and more). The good news is that most dental disease is largely preventable with great daily habits and regular visits with your dental pros for exams, preventive dental care and treatment as required Dental hygienists are your partners in prevention! Here’s a little more info about periodontal disease: Gingivitis (inflammation of the gums): can be prevented and healed with great daily habits like thorough brushing and interdental cleaning to remove disease causing dental plaque. Signs of gingivitis include red puffy gums that bleed easily when brushed or flossed. Periodontitis: mainly a chronic disease with many risk factors including (but not limited to) genetics, smoking, and poor oral health. It results in damage to the bones that support your teeth and can lead to tooth loss. Bone loss can’t be reversed but can be managed with help from your dental pros (regular scaling, root planing and other interventions). Infections: The aggressive bacteria present in dental infections can be destructive to the lining of your heart and valves. Those with pre-existing heart conditions are at a higher risk for bacterial endocarditis! If you experience a dental infection, check in with your dental pros (or medical professional) as soon as possible! For more information about keeping your heart healthy, check out Heart & Stroke on social media or visit their website www.heartandstroke.ca/

February is national pet dental health month! Our pals over at Sunrise Animal Hospital shared some tips for keeping your pet’s teeth and gums healthy! Make sure you use products recommended by your veterinarian as ingredients in traditional toothpastes (like fluoride and xylitol) can be poisonous to dogs. Xylitol is safe for humans but actually lethal to pets. It’s a natural sweetener added to foods like some peanut butters, mints and gum. It can help lower a human’s risk of having cavities by neutralizing your saliva, but it is VERY dangerous for your furry ones.

If you’re leaving your house, these two statements are likely true; 1- you’ve probably forgotten your reusable shopping bags 2- you’ll be wearing a mask or face covering if you plan on entering into a public space (oh, and you probably forgot that too ) Wearing a mask is a simple way to help prevent a community spread, and for most of us, it’s become our new normal. This change in our routine can actually have a pretty big impact on our oral health! Why? Xerostomia (dry mou...th). If you are taking any medications, have allergies/sinus issues, have been diagnosed with Sjrogen’s or have had radiation of the head and neck, you may already experience dry mouth because your salivary flow has been compromised. Wearing a mask tends to lead to a whole other level of dryness because you’re not able to hydrate out on the go like you once could and it encourages mouth breathing instead of breathing through your nose. Many of us are now wearing a mask for a large portion of our day. I catch myself breathing through my mouth every. single. time. I wear a mask in public and it’s a hard habit to break! Dry mouth can cause: bad breath increased risk of cavities and periodontal disease red inflamed gums that bleed easily oral lesions like ulcers difficulty swallowing/talking Ways to manage: be mindful of your breathing; make an effort to breathe through your nose stay hydrated; keep a (reusable) bottle of water with you when possible use gum/mints that contain xylitol to help neutralize your saliva (we love X-Pur product from Oral Science and Pur chewing gum) consider adding dental products to your routine that are high in fluoride+xylitol (we love Opti-Rinse by Oral Science) refrain from smoking; it makes dry mouth way worse nail down a daily oral hygiene routine that includes amazing brushing and interdental cleaning visit your dental professionals regularly; your dental hygienist can help you identify and modify behaviours that increase your risk of oral health problems talk to a medical doctor if your dry mouth become unmanageable We love helping our clients improve and maintain their oral health and we carry samples of the products that we recommend the most! Booking an appointment with a registered dental hygienist is SUPER easy. Simply click "book now" on FB/IG to use our online booking system. You can also message us or call/text us on the gumLINE 709-330-GUMS(4867) if you have questions or to check on last minute availability.

On CBC Newfoundland and Labrador Cross Talk today, Ramona Dearing discussed the use of single-use plastics in our province. Did you know that most plastic toothbrushes aren’t recyclable? Millions of toothbrushes end up in landfills each year, so when it comes to supporting the oral health of our clients... we keep the environment in mind! Brush Naked bamboo toothbrushes are naturally antibacterial and anti-microbial. They are made in China and have a 100% moso bamboo handle ...with BPA-free DuPont nylon bristles. The packaging for each toothbrush is 100% biodegradable/compostable - the boxes are made and printed in British Columbia and the brush is wrapped in a 100% biodegradable/compostable cello made from wood and cotton pulp. To date, we have kept 2,222 plastic toothbrushes out of the landfills by providing bamboo brushes in their place as our complimentary post-cleaning toothbrush of choice! The Brush Naked Bamboo Toothbrush Company believes in sustainable living, and we’re proud to purchase from them! These brushes are also available at the Studio for $5! That's right! Whitening boosts are BACK. Add a 20 minute whitening treatment on to your dental hygiene visit for $55... and for a limited time, get a complimentary DH Studio TVAL Skincare lipbalm!! These 20 minute sessions are great for boosting your current shade and maintaining a naturally bright smile. In our experience, if you have whitened in the past year or two, you can expect more dramatic results. If you've never whitened before, you can expect more conservative (bu...t noticeable) results. We love using Wicked White Professional Tooth Whitening products in office because they're pH balanced, vegan friendly and our clients report a lot less sensitivity than with other professional systems and brands. You may be a candidate for this service if you: - have healthy teeth and gums - no crowns, veneers, or fillings on front teeth (only natural teeth change shade) - aren't pregnant or breastfeeding Side effects include: - spontaneous out bursts of smiling - possible (temporary) sensitivity to cold - mild (temporary) irritation of the gums To book: Click "Book Now" at the top of our page or visit www.dhstudio.ca to schedule an appointment. You'll see the service available as an "add on". If you forget to choose it or decide to add it on last minute, you can just let Sam or your registered dental hygienist know on the day of your visit!

Sam is our resident Disney fan (which you may have noticed if you've been in recently) and Tobi's signature "Netflix & Floss?" just doesn't hit the mark for her! We thought a slight tweak was needed - "Disney +[Plus] and brush?" hits the spot! Effective tooth brushing (along with interdental cleaning and other healthy habits) can help you lower your chance of having cavities, gingivitis, mouth sores, sensitivity (+ more) and can help keep your breath fresh by keeping stinky ...bacteria at bay. In oral health, there's a space of around 2-3mm deep between your gums and your teeth... and that's where the more aggressive bacteria tend to hang out. In order to do a thorough job brushing (whether you use an electric toothbrush or a regular brush) you need to make sure the bristles of your brush tickle just below your gumline in addition to cleaning all the other surfaces of your teeth. You won't be able to reach the very bottom of that pocket (that's where us dental hygienists come in with our teensy tiny tools), but you can typically get around 1-2mm down there! If you use a regular brush or an electric toothbrush with a small straight head (like a Sonicare) you can make this happen by angling your toothbrush a little (45 degrees to be exact). If you use an electric toothbrush with a small round head, you just need to apply very light pressure and let it do it's thing. Proper brushing might not make your Disney sing-alongs sound better, but putting in the effort means you don't have to "Wish Upon a Star" for a great smile!

Thinking about switching to an electric toothbrush? We carry several models at varying price points here in-office at the Dental Hygiene Studio, including the Oral B 500, 2000, 3000 and Genius! Research from an 11 year cohort study showed that electric toothbrushes were more effective at removing plaque, decreasing/preventing inflammation and also helping to prevent cavities and ultimately tooth loss! The Oral-B line of brushes offer a small round bristled head that resemble...s a professional polisher. It adapts to the natural shape of your gumline and the head turns back and forth cleaning your mouth tooth by tooth. There are many different heads to choose from (polishing cup/bristle combo, orthodontic, cross action, ultra soft) to suit your needs. Wondering if you should make the switch to electric? We recommend electric toothbrushes to clients who: self report (or we suspect) that theyre brushing too hard have trouble reaching hard to get to areas with a manual brush have braces or other hard to clean fixed appliances self report (or we suspect) that theyre not brushing long enough have areas of dental plaque remaining after theyve brushed have receding gums people who build up tartar faster than normal If youre intrigued and want to know more, talk to your dental professional at your next visit or feel free to comment or message us your questions!

The link between oral health and overall health & wellness is being continuously researched and documented! It’s important to note that these relationships aren’t all cause and effect, but keeping your oral health in check can help prevent complications. Here's what you need to know: Brain health - The connection between brain health and oral health isn’t fully understood. Research shows that there’s a chance bacteria can travel from the mouth to the brain via the inflammator...y pathway and increase a person’s risk of stroke. There is also some early evidence that shows there may be a link between oral bacteria and Alzheimer’s! Mental health - Because poor oral health affects basic human functions (like eating, smiling, talking, etc.), it can cause a lot of stress and pain which in turn can affect a person’s mental health and wellness. (Check out our post from last Monday where we took a deep dive on mental health) Heart disease - Research suggests that clogged arteries might be linked to the inflammation and infections caused by oral bacteria. There is also evidence that bacteria from your mouth can infect the inner lining of your heart chambers (bacterial endocarditis). Respiratory problems - Studies have shows that bacteria in the mouth can be pulled into the lungs and cause bacterial pneumonia. Diabetes - Because diabetes reduces the body’s resistance to infection, gum disease affects diabetics more often and more severely than those who don’t have diabetes. Research also shows that people who have periodontal disease (gingivitis/periodontitis) have a more difficult time regulating their blood sugar. Pregnancy and birth complications - Periodontal disease has been linked to premature births and low birth weights. Also, women who are pregnant tend to have a heightened response to oral bacteria and are more likely to experience pregnancy induced gingivitis! Other links that are being researched include various cancers, sexual dysfunction and more. Need help maintaining or improving your oral health? One of our amazing dental hygienists would love to help you with that! Book an appointment today for a dental cleaning; it takes less than a minute! Antisewcial operates out of Torbay - each piece is handmade and so comfy & stylish. Carolyn focuses on sustainability as well and the quality can be seen in each piece :) check out her page and website, and keep your eye on her next re-stock like us (which will sell out at lightening speed!)

Wow!! 4 years ago today, I saw my first client at the Dental Hygiene Studio! I may have started this journey by myself, but I wasn't alone. I can't even take credit for where we are today, because even though my name is on "the papers", I owe it to you all to recognize your contributions!! And I genuinely mean "you all". Friends, family, clients, followers, mentors, even people who weren't supportive.... you have all played a critical roll in the success of our practice and I... want to thank you!!! This anniversary is a little different than the others because so much has changed! We're grateful that despite coming out of a 3 month hiatus, we've grown. We've learned. We've evolved. And now I have this amazing team who are committed to inspiring healthy and confident smiles through disease prevention and oral health promotion. Samantha Aylward, Carrie Rimando RDH and Tobi Stuckless RDH I'm so thankful to have you all on board Nicole Kielly RDH And now, here's our story in its entirety... as told by Sam. For those of you new to the Dental Hygiene Studio, it all started back in 2015! In 2015, Nicole started her business as "The Travelling Hygienist" using mobile equipment to make dental hygiene services more available to the general public, doing both mobile appointments and setting up a clinic in St. Joseph's in 2016. The success of these initiatives drove Nicole to expand further and take the leap to found the Dental Hygiene Studio. In September of 2016, the Studio opened in its first location in this same building, in the downstairs office as we featured a few weeks back. A year and a half ago, Nicole moved to our current office space and our current team of Tobi, Carrie and Sam came on during the summer of 2020. It's been 4 years of learning, growing, and making the business the best it can be. We're always striving to improve our practices and embracing all of the new challenges brought our way, such as with the pandemic this year. We want to say a great big THANK YOU to all of our clients, supporters, friends and family for their support over the years. To say we could not do it without your support is an understatement! We have been able to grow and expand in this amazing office because of our wonderful clients who keep coming back (and referring their friends too!).

We never let insurance coverage dictate the treatment we recommend, but we believe that when you understand your benefits, you can make more informed decisions about accessing preventive dental care Heres our go to guide to have in hand when calling your insurance provider or looking at your coverage booklet (or fancy app). P. S. If you are a member of any of the following group plans, we know your coverage very well; the NLTA, Government of NL, Eastern Health, Federal Go...vernment and Verafin. Feel free to reach out to us for more information! Other information to help you break it down: - a unit of time is 15 minutes - most insurance companies cover a number of units of scaling (removal of tartar, stain and plaque with tiny tools) that can be distributed accordingly and are not restricted to every 3,4,6, 9 or 12 months - some services (like polishing and fluoride treatments) are restricted to 3,4,6,9 or 12 months - you may be covered for more scaling visits than polishes and thats ok! Stain and plaque can be removed via scaling and you can opt to pay for a polish out of pocket if you choose. - a typical adult dental hygiene visit with us usually involves 2-3.5 units of scaling - we recommend recare intervals based on your needs... but we respect your decision to make an informed decision to visit us less or more often (no matter your coverage). Many of our clients who have trouble nailing down a daily routine, those with inflammation and people who build up tartar/stain quickly tend to prefer 3 cleanings a year! Visit our website for more helpful info on breaking down your insurance coverage, our fees for services and payment plan options! https://dhstudio.ca/our-fees%2Bservices

A little sensitivity is normal, but if you get "lit up" when eating/drinking or during regular brushing/chewing, it could be a sign things have gone awry! If you experience a sudden change in how sensitive your teeth are, get in touch with your dentist and book an appointment to make sure there isnt anything serious going down (ie cavities, infection, broken teeth/fillings). If youre experiencing intermittent or chronic sensitivity, there may be things you can do at home to...Continue reading

I just gave my support to this cause and if it's something you feel strongly about, I urge you to show yours as well. As a dental hygienist, I'm in tune with the inequities in oral health care in our province and in our country. I've seen it my chair, in my community with my own two eyes (and hands), and I've felt it in my heart. Our province has a great children's dental program for kids under 13, but the truth is that there is a HUGE percentage of the population who can't... access regular care. The dental programs accessed by those who need social assistance in Newfoundland and Labrador offer ZERO coverage for prevention. Nothing. No opportunities for education with a registered dental hygienist for daily home care, no scaling, no fluoride treatments. It perpetuates a cycle of infection, pain, and mental health/social issues. I know. There's no money. This sounds *expensive*. I don't have numbers to wow you with, but I know one thing for sure. Disease costs more than health. Emergency visits, meds for pain/infection, extraction after extraction after extraction and then dentures, mental health issues, addiction, exacerbated health issues (heart, lung, diabetes). These things are expensive. Nicole Kielly RDH Please click this link to show your support https://jackharris.ndp.ca/why-shouldnt-health-care-cover-yo

As hygienists, we're always trying to find ways to help our clients build healthy oral health habits. Tobi's tactics include her signature catch phrase - "Netflix & Floss?" This one tends to hit home for a lot of our clients in this post-shutdown lifestyle :P The phrase 'habit stacking' was coined by Wall Street Journal bestselling author S.J Scott. In his 2014 book Habit Stacking "97 Small Life Changes That Take Five Minutes or Less" proposes you, "build routines around hab...its that don't require effort" because "small wins build momentum because they're easy to remember and complete." Many of our clients have built a regular flossing habit by pairing it with another thing they do regularly/daily like watching tv, getting ready for bed or the classic brushing of the teeth. Once you get the hang of the technique, you'll find it really easy to do it outside of the bathroom mirror. Just be sure to practice good hygiene and wash your hands before and after if you're putting your hands in your mouth ; )

Do you experience floss related guilt every time you sit a dental chair? Fret not my friend, you may have other options! The truth is that brushing by itself leaves behind disease causing plaque. You need to clean the inbetweens to access the funkier stuff, but floss isnt your only option for interdental cleaning! You can also try:... a Waterpik: cleans below the gumline and around teeth with a small narrow stream of water under pressure. Want to learn more? Check out this quick video: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=tmBcEf2jfks an interdental brush: a teensy tiny brush that can actually brush in between your teeth. They come in a variety of sizes and brands! We have sample of Gum SunStar interproximal brushes at the clinic and give them out with hygiene visits when appropriate. floss sticks: cant get the handle on the string? Those little sticks grip the floss making it easier to maneuver them around. Pro tip: if youre new to interdental cleaning, be sure to set a realistic goal. Start off with once or twice a week and build on your habit when youre ready. Most people find that once they get in a routine, their teeth dont feel clean unless they floss. Not sure which to do first? We usually recommend cleaning the in-betweens before you brush cause sometimes the stuff you get outta there is nasty smelling/tasting ; )

One of Tobi's clients was so relaxed yesterday that his fitness watch logged his visit as a nap because he was reclined and his heart rate stayed so low! And it wasn't a super *easy* visit. Like most people, he was overdue for a hygiene visit and had a little more inflammation and tartar built up than usual. So what's the secret to having a relaxed appointment? When you visit a registered dental hygienist at our dental hygiene clinic, you receive the same level of care that y...ou would if you visited a RDH at a regular dental office. The main differences are that we don't take xrays and you visit your dentist separately for regular exams... but the real magic comes from the atmosphere. We strive to provide care in a relaxed setting! This includes how our clinic looks and *feels*, the music we play, limiting the amount of time clients spend in our waiting area (virtually zero) and helping improve our client's oral health outcomes and confidence by setting realistic daily goals for home care. Need help maintaining or improving your oral health? We got you. Send us a message or call/text us on the gumLINE at 709-330-GUMS(4867). Our online booking system is open 24/7 and it takes less than a minute to book an appointment with one of our registered dental hygienists. **This screen shot was posted with our client's permission ; )

Let's talk about gingivitis! Did you know that healthy gums don't bleed when brushed/flossed thoroughly? If you see a little pink in the sink or red on the string, there's a good chance that you have gingivitis lurking somewhere in your mouth! Researchers are continuously investigating how bacteria can travel from your mouth to the rest of your body via this inflammatory pathway. You may think that it's no biggie, but having even a localized area of inflamed gum tissue can je...opardize your oral and overall health. The good news is that this common dental problem is reversible and preventable! Keep your gums in tip top shape by following these pro tips: nail down a daily routine that includes brushing and interdental cleaning (flossing, WaterPik, interdental brushes)** practice mindful brushing/flossing; your bristles need to reach along/under your gums and floss needs to dip gently below your gumline on either side of your tooth avoid smoking check in with your dental pros regularly for professional care and guidance **Never under estimate the benefits of a daily oral hygiene routine when maintaining and improving your oral health. Even if you are unable to access a dental professional regularly, daily removal of plaque can help prevent existing dental conditions from worsening**

Did you know that your toothbrush needs to reach below your gumline in order to effectively clean your teeth? If you see a little pink in the sink (or on the string), theres a good chance that you may have some localized areas of gingivitis. But dont fret. This type of inflammation is commonly found in areas where dental plaque is being left behind and can usually be reversed by adding a little mindfulness to your technique. For a manual brush youll need to tip your brist...les slightly upwards or downwards (depending if youre on top or bottom) and direct the bristles approximately 1-2mm below your gumline. Gently wiggle them slightly to get the disease causing gunk out and then sweep them towards the biting edge of your teeth. If you use an electric brush, you essentially guide it along and let it do all the work! If you use an Oral B style brush (round spinning/oscillating head) youll need to apply a little bit of pressure to splay the bristles under your gumline. If youre using a Sonicare style brush, you can direct the bristles on an angle similarly to the technique outlined in the manual brush technique. Youll need to use floss, an interproximal brush, Waterpik or another interdental aid to help remove the plaque from the areas that your toothbrush just cant reach.
