Big Social is back and wants you to... Share Food and Change Lives!!! From October 9 to 25, thousands of people in Perth and across the country will connect, in-person or online, to share food and raise money for healthy food programs and services that support people living on low incomes. ... How does this work during the COVID19 pandemic? Any way you'd like it to - just stay safe. You could join friends for a meal online, or do something in person with your "bubble". If organizing a whole meal doesn't seem to fit with you right now you could get a group together for an online food-related event like making the same batch of bread, or to share ideas of how to use the abundance of local seasonal produce. The point is to connect over food in a way that works for you and your circle. Please remember to select "Perth, ON The Table Community Food Center", to that your good work goes directly to programs at The Table Community Food Centre. It’s easy to join. 1. Sign up at https://bigsocial.ca/ 2. Choose to support Perth, On the Table Community Food Center 3. Set a fundraising goal 4. Invite guests, and ask them to make a donation 5. Share Food, Change Lives #thebigsocial #fundraiser #perth #PerthProud #communitysupport #sharefood #changelives #sharefoodchangelives #CFC #CFCC #thetable

Over the last few months, our community has been incredibly generous towards The Table. We are so glad that this support has made it possible to adapt our programs and continue to be a support during the COVID19 pandemic. We want to make sure we will be able to support and build up our community long after this current crisis has ended. Will you Grow With Us?... It takes many seeds to grow a beautiful and bountiful garden. This summer, we are looking for 50 outstanding community members to plant a seed and Grow With Us, by becoming monthly donors. Monthly donors allow us to plan ahead with the security of a consistent income. Just like in the garden, no seed is too small to make an impact, and your monthly donation of even $5.00 would make a difference in our efforts to provide Good Food For All! We thank you all for all your support and dedication to The Table, if you are unable to become a monthly donor would you consider sharing this post? #GrowWithUs into the future!!! To become a monthly donor via credit card, please visit: https://app.etapestry.com//TheTableCommunityFoodCen/2.html To become a monthly donor via cheque please send a void cheque and indicate the day of the month you'd like the money to be transferred, to The Table, 190 Gore St. E. What do we do at the Community Advocacy Office? At times it is difficult to communicate exactly what the Community Navigators do. Part of the issue is that our scope is quite broad. There are issues we regularly connect with people about, such as housing, hydro bills, and taxes. But we’re also open to receiving calls about any number of issues that may affect people living on low incomes, including the simple human need to be listened to. While a big part of our work is refe...rring people to more specialised resources, we know that those resources may have long wait times, or uncertain outcomes, so we remain available to our participants on an ongoing basis to hear their frustrations as they work through these processes. And in particular during the pandemic, we have a number of participants we simply check in with by phone on a regular basis to reduce their feelings of isolation. The Table recently received a lovely letter of thanks from a participant who has been working with one of the Community Navigators on a difficult issue. They gave us permission to quote this letter expressing what this help meant to them: [Community Navigator] was able to help me navigate a complicated system while always making it clear that I was making all of the decisions. At no time did she imply that the Table CFC would be able to solve any of the issues, but was able to convey a message of empathy and offer excellent suggestions on what could be tried. Over the years I have been in very difficult positions, many of them emotionally overwhelming. I had no idea what supports were available and missed so many opportunities that would have been life-changing. If I had been able to work with an advocate on this same level then I would have been spared so much. We thank this participant so much for taking the time to tell us what having a Navigator in their corner has meant to them, and we hope this helps others who are struggling to reach out to us, so that we can have the opportunity to be in your corner too. To reach us, call 613-267-6428 x29 or email [email protected] More information about us: http://thetablecfc.org/advocacy http://thetablecfc.org//utility-help-tables-peer-advocacy-

It’s time for another update from your friendly neighbourhood Community Navigators! (AKA the Advocacy Office)! First of all, the Beyond Hunger Report is out! This multi-media report from Community Food Centres Canada shares so much essential information about food insecurity into a format that is easy to understand and share with others to help spread awareness, and even includes actions you can take right now to start making change. We encourage you to take a look at https:/.../beyondhunger.ca/ and share it with others. Secondly, we would like to highlight two important observances that recently happened: Orange Shirt Day to remember the cruelty of the residential school system, and the Sisters in Spirit vigil for missing & murdered indigenous women, girls, and 2 spirit people. While it is important that we set aside specific days and times to clarify our support for these important issues that continue to affect so many indigenous people in our community and beyond, it is equally important that we not confine our consideration of these issues & our commitment to reconciliation to a single day of the year. Especially when we cannot safely gather in numbers reflective of how many people in our community are concerned about these issues, we must continue to seek other ways to move forward in right relationship with our neighbours. There are many informative resources you can find online. Here are just a few quick links that are worth checking out. Orange Shirt Day learning resources for students of all ages: https://www.orangeshirtday.org/resources--supplies.html Native Women’s Association of Canada page on MMIWG & Violence Prevention: https://www.nwac.ca/policy-areas/mmiwg/ The Moose Hide Campaign: https://moosehidecampaign.ca/ As always, we love to learn about resources you have found helpful, so please share them in the comments! Did you know the Community Advocacy Office can still help you from home? Pandemic safety means changing the way we do things. Although we have not been seeing participants in our office since March, the Navigators have continued to connect with community members in other ways. Some of what we have been doing:... - Check in calls with people who are experiencing social isolation. - Navigating housing supports, including access to County rental listings and other resources for people looking for a place to live. - Looking up a variety of resources online for folks who have been unable to access the internet due to library closures, not having a computer at home, etc. - Helping people apply for or renew their Ontario Energy Savings Program (OESP) to save money on hydro bills (over the phone). - Helping people apply for the Low-income Energy Assistance Program (LEAP) to cover arrears and avoid having their hydro shut off (by phone and email, or by appointment at the Table). - Compiling resource lists for common issues our participants may want to know about, such as mental health helplines, outdoor public WiFi access points, sources for reliable legal information, and scams to avoid. To get in touch with us, you can call (613) 267-6428 ext. 29 and leave a message, or email [email protected]. Our hours are Monday (2-5pm), Tuesday (12-3:30pm), Wednesday (3:30 - 6pm) and Friday (2-5pm).
