TIFF staff and board members were sad to learn of the passing of Dimitri Eipides, one of the great programmers over TIFF’s history, who passed away today in his... hometown of Athens after a long illness. Between 1988 and 2018, Dimitri worked as an International Programmer for the Toronto International Film Festival, championing films from Eastern and Central Europe, Western and Central Asia, and Greece. During his time at TIFF, he introduced Toronto audiences to international film icons such as Béla Tarr, Abbas Kiarostami, Mohsen Makhmalbaf, Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne, Michael Haneke, and many more. He sought out the finest, most challenging films, and brought them to audiences with a suitable mix of gravitas and impish humour. Although he shied away from the spotlight, he made lifelong friends among filmmakers and industry professionals, thanks to his impeccable taste in cinema. Dimitri championed the art of cinema above all, bringing films that meant so much to him to audiences here in Toronto as well as Montreal, Reykjavik, and Thessaloniki. He was our purest flame and his legacy will never be forgotten. TIFF Co-Heads Cameron Bailey and Joana Vicente
