On this date in 1914, as 132 sealers worked to earn a living & provide for their families, a severe blizzard left them stranded on the ice unable to return to t...heir ship, the SS Newfoundland. Only 55 of the 132 survived having been spotted by the Stephano & aided by the SS Bellaventure & the SS Florizel in the rescue. Many of the survivors suffered the loss of limbs. Another 173 men were lost when the SS Southern Cross sank during the same storm. The disaster is recorded in visual artworks, writing & film, including at the John C. Crosbie Interpretation Centre & Sealers Memorial in Elliston, Newfoundland & Labrador as one of the most tragic events in NL’s history.
