Surveying in unusual locations? No problem! Our team at Underhill takes part on many adventures and sees many of the BC's best kept secret places. Underhill’s Aaron Shufletoski and Tim Livermore were just recently surveying on a small island off the Sunshine Coast, where famous settler Harry Roberts retired in 1935 after Sechelt grew too big for his liking. No matter where the job is, Underhill can get there and get it done!

Showing off some new technology here at Underhill! This drone is a Quantum-Systems GmbH F90. The Vertical Take off and Landing (VTOL) capability has increased our ability to find smaller landing zones and enhances the safety of staff on the project. #underhilllife #underhill #technologythursday #drones #mapping #uav

The Pattullo Bridge Replacement Project is currently undergoing a detailed design process and as you can see from the artist’s rendering the new bridge will have two in-river piers, reduced from the six piers the current bridge has in the river. Northwest Hydraulic Consultants (NHC) was contracted to build a 1/80 scale model of the existing Skytrain, Pattullo and CN Rail bridge pilings, on the river bed so that hydraulic impacts can be tested and evaluated on the new bridge... pilings, as well as the upgrades to the CN railway pilings for earthquake preparedness. The model is representative of what water in the Fraser River will do in relation to the new bridge structures and tests various construction and environment scenarios. A summary of the process: - NHC built the original model - Underhill performed the initial 3D laser scan to determine the current state of the river bed to ensure it was accurate to as is data. -Then NHC added the new proposed structures and performs tests by flooding the model with varying water levels, current speeds etc. Our team at Underhill is brought in each time a test has been completed to scan the resulting changes to the river bed after the flow has been drained. The new data are transformed as a digital surface which is overlapped on the reference river bed to reveal the changes. Underhill has been scanning this model regularly for NHC after each test for 4 years now. You can see in the images the targets we place on the facility walls in order to precisely match each scan overlay to the previous scenarios and the baseline. As the bridge is currently undergoing design refinements, we cannot show the model in full detail, however it’s very interesting to see the effects each test has on the river bed and how our 3D scanning technology is being used to provide accurate data to NHC for their testing. More information on the Pattullo Bridge project can be found here: https://engage.gov.bc.ca/pattullobridge/

This week’s employee highlight is Aaron Rooke, one of our summer students employed with us for his third summer. As a fully certified Advanced Drone Pilot, he’s been invaluable to our team! Aaron is headed into his fourth year at BCIT: British Columbia Institute of Technology, taking the Geomatics Bachelor of Science program. Five facts about Aaron: - Aaron was born in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, as the fourth child in a family of 6 children. ... - A graduate of McGill University, Aaron has a degree in Psychology. - He also was an ESL teacher, and taught in Korea, Japan and Vancouver. - Aaron speaks English, French and a little Korean. - Like many Canadians, Aaron plays hockey, however he started playing at the ripe old age of 30! As Aaron enters his fourth year at BCIT, he is currently working on his capstone project, which involves conducting a UAV survey of Wedgemount Glacier in order to determine the extent of glacial retreat compared to previous surveys. Aaron and his team will make comparisons with previous surveys using an orthophoto derived from the UAV images. They also intend to gather thermal imagery with a FLIR camera mounted on the UAV and will use it to create a thermal orthophoto. This is a relatively new field of study and procedures are not yet well established. This information can be helpful to glacier researchers to determine the current state of the glacier. Aaron, we thank you for another great summer working with us at Underhill, and look forward to reading more about your capstone project when it is complete! #geomatics #summerstudent #employment #UAV #BCIT #Underhill #Underhilllife

Did you know? Underhill Avenue is named after Dr. Frederick Underhill who was the father of our founders, Clare and J.T. Underhill. Dr. Underhill was the City of Vancouver's first full time medical health officer. Starting in 1904, he served the City for some 26 years. He organized the first regular garbage collection in Vancouver, pushed for improvements in the Lower Mainland's water supply, and instituted better inspection of foodstuffs. He was recognized for his role in the Spanish Flu Pandemic of 1918. In 1938, the City of Burnaby named Underhill Avenue in his honour. Our Burnaby office is located on Eastlake Drive, which intersects Underhill Avenue just down the road from us. We are proud to remember the legacy of Dr Frederick Underhill.

A great example of great clean data capture using the Leica P40. Underhill was tasked in completing a topographical survey of a downtown urban street, the length of which was 2.4 kilometres. Field capture was completed in 8 hours with a combination of cyclone, TopoDOT and Autodesk Civil 3D used to complete final topographical drawings. The field data captured however, was something to behold. With a mixture of new modern buildings combined with the older architecture it made quite an interesting project. By using a combination of both conventional survey equipment and the latest geo-spatial technology Underhill has the ability to provide our clients with the highest quality of data. #underhill #Vancouver #laserscanning #pointclouds #realitycapture #efficiency #Leica #TopoDOT #surveying #underhilllife

We hope you’ve enjoyed our National Indigenous History Month series on major Indigenous land claims surveys that Underhill has been involved in North of 60. Although many of the Indigenous claims in Yukon, Northwest Territories and Nunavut have been surveyed and agreements have been reached, the work will continue there, also in a big way in British Columbia. Underhill and others are actively working on agreements and surveys as the work progresses to complete the land claims with the Indigenous peoples of British Columbia. #indigenoushistorymonth #underhill #underhilllife

Underhill completed the scanning and modelling of 3 bridges recently. 1 bridge being a small concrete underpass, the second being a steel bridge and the third being a large road overpass bridge. Using laser scanning, we were able to efficiently complete the scanning of these bridges, saving significant time on the project. All modelling was done in Autodesk Revit with exports both in RVT and DWG formats. #underhill #laserscanning #surveying #bridges #structures #britishcolumbia #Revit #revitmodelling #underhilllife #underhillgeomatics
