Break the chain of misinformation. Parents today were fed the false narrative that lifting is inherently dangerous, stunts growth of children, has limited overall benefits and is bad for the knees and back. The chain of communication for this false narrative from parent to child needs to stop.... Not sure where to go from here? It's okay to ask for help. When people don't know what to do in the gym, they often copy what they see other people doing. But guess what? Chances are those people are doing it wrong too. By asking for help and spending time with a professional, you skip all the guess-work, confusion and wasted time.... And if you think you've already got everything figured out, take a second and ask yourself... Is there room for improvement? Working with a coach can be a lifelong process. It can also be a short-term reset to get back on track or an opportunity to learn the ropes better. Either way, its okay to ask for help! . . . . . #ygk #fitnesstrainer #fitness #fitnesseducation#ygkfitness #healthylifestyle #getacoach #ygkkingston #getstrong #getfitnesshelp #onlinefitnesstraining #motivation #healthy #fitnessreflection #workout #exercise #strengthandconditioning #training #mentalhealth #askforhelp #fitnesssupport #health #wellness #strengthtraining See more

Start with something you enjoy. The first rule when trying to improve your health with fitness is picking something you get excited about. This will help with motivation and consistency in the beginning as you make your routine into a habit. ... But remember, you'll still have off-days when you want to skip your workout regardless of how much you enjoy it. Its okay that you're not excited about it every day. It's even okay to skip it now and then. What's important is you know how to deal with the situation when it happens so that your long-term success isn't affected. Ask yourself what or who you can rely on to keep you on track when your enjoyment is not enough to keep you going. . . . . . #fitnessmotivation #fitness #getfit #staymoving #planforfailure #dowhatyouenjoy #dowhatyoulove #lovewhatyoudo #getstrong @strengthtraining #health #healthandfitness #startyourfitnessjouney #healthandwellness #staymotivated #fitnessconsistency #ygk #ygkkingston #ygkbusiness

How will you spend your winter months? Winter is coming folks. Fewer and fewer people are going to be active outdoors as the temperature drops. In fact, Canadians are 86% less likely to be engaging in leisure-time physical activity during the winter. But lets think about the spring for a second... Where do you want to be in April? Stronger, leaner and more resilient sounds pretty good, right?... But, where will you be in April if you don't take action right now? Probably in the exact same place... or worse. How’s your squat foundation? You want a good foundation when you squat and that starts with the feet. There are three important points of contact we want between our feet and the ground: the heel, the base of the big toe and base of the pinky toe. Draw these points together towards the middle of your foot to activate your intrinsic foot muscles and reinforce weight distribution to midfoot.... This three-point technique also allows you to screw your feet into the floor to create torque at the knee and hip for a stronger, more efficient lift. (Psst try this on your deadlift setup too!) Go get those foot gains! . . . . . . #squatfoundation #intrinsicfootmuscles #fitness #squatbetter #squatheavier #squatheavy #ygkfitness #liftheavy #resistancetraining #strong #trainbetter #ygk #barbelltraining #barbellsquat #squat

Resistance training is not dangerous. There so are many other activities you could do that are more likely to injure you. For instance, for 1000 hours of gym training, there are roughly 2.5-3.8 injuries. Let’s think about that for a second. Most people only workout 1 hour each session, about 3 times a week- that’s 156 hours per year in the gym.... This means that roughly over a 6.5 year period, you’ll incur 2.5-3.8 injuries. The following is true for other sports for the same participation time (1000 hours): Running: 2.9-4.4 Hockey: 5.8-9.8 Soccer: 6.3-9.7 Squash: 11.4-29.4 Common, need we say more? . . . . . You can't work off a poor diet. Some people believe that since they workout often they’re entitled to eat whatever they want. Working out regularly is amazing for your health but it doesn't undo the effects of eating a poor diet. It also holds you back from reaching goals around body composition, weight loss and potentially even gaining muscle.... Just because you live an active lifestyle doesn’t mean you shouldn’t also take care about what goes into your body. Stick it out or take a break? I’m still a bit sore from my last workout, is it safe for me to come in today? Soreness after a workout is completely normal but should you take a break or stick it out? The answer to this question is: It depends. ... If you can barely move or get out of a chair, you should probably rest and FYI, you may have overdone it in your last session. Consider making changes to that workout for next week; either reduce the total volume or overall intensity. If you’re only experiencing some mild achiness but can still be productive, then stick it out! Just try to focus the day on other muscle groups or movement patterns. This will give more time for recovery of those previously worked muscle groups and allow for a greater amount of adaptation to occur- we're talking gains here! . . . . . . #ygk #ygkfitness #recoverfromtraining #DOMS #Overtraining #strong #resistancetraining #trainhard #trainhardeveryday #fitness #restandrecover

Lifting weights can be scary for anyone, but that fear often grows even more as we get older. Unfortunately, we are taught that older people are frail or weak and as a result should slow down. In reality, not exercising is doing more harm than good, especially if you have a chronic condition. Resistance training can help preserve quality of life through improved muscle tone, bone mineral density, mobility, balance and coordination, and mental health. ... Consider the people in your own life who this applies to. Don’t encourage them to slow down- this is the time to get moving and keep them strong! #aginggracefully #strong #strongereveryday #fitnessover60 #mastersathlete #fintessforlife #ygkfitness #ygkbusiness #ygk

The deadlift starting position looks very different depending on the proportions of your body. This is why it’s crucial to avoid comparing your back angle and hip height to anyone else. To find what works for you, just follow two simple steps. 1. Step under the bar so that the barbell is over the middle of your foot. 2. Once you bend over and grab the bar, drop your hips until your shins touch the bar, and set your back, the bar should be approximately in line with the crea...se of the armpit. This may not feel comfortable at first but it will result in a more efficient lift. Don’t worry if your body doesn’t look the same here as the person next to you. You were built differently and that’s okay :)
