"However, the more I create art, the more I realize how useful it can be to improve learning. When we shift our perspective on a concept, interesting things start to happen. The assignment becomes less of a task and more of a personal project something that could entertain us." MyUVic Life Blogger Ethan shares his poem inspired by biology in this blog post as part of a bonus assignment for one of his classes. Check it out below!

Thought you might need a few photos of this adorable campus visitor to help you head in to the weekend. The adorable golden retriever Sidney is part of a road schooling family that has made Vancouver Island their temporary home due to the travel restrictions. Because of this Sidney and her family visit UVic frequently because they love the campus and especially Finnerty Gardens. : instagram.com/juliakuei

In a year where it would seem impossible to come together, UVic Vikes student-athletes have found a way to make it happen. This past summer former Vikes men’s soccer captain Mackenzie Rigg was unexpectedly diagnosed with a Stage IV brain tumour. While the varsity teams were coping with a lack of a season and championship opportunity, they were able to come together for a different type of victory. In late-October student-athletes initiated a fundraiser for the Brain Tumour F...oundation of Canada. The first three days pushed totals over $23,000 raised in Mackenzie’s name. The goal became a moving target as support flooded in towards the scheduled Nov. 20-22 weekend where the varsity teams were slated to run 270-km collectively representing 27 new diagnoses of brain tumours each day. While only the varsity soccer teams, who are in the same training cohorts, were able to physically come together, participation poured in over the weekend from all over the country and even oversees. UVic Alumni across all sports and their family members and supporters joined in to run 5-km with #runformack. Fellow Canada West and U SPORTS Canadateams across many sports also hit the pavement running collectively and sharing the word about #VikesKickCancer. The fundraising totals were around $53,000 before the weekend run but totals now push over $68,000 unlocking the ability for a grant to be made in Mackenzie’s name and he will be able to select the specific type of tumour that will receive the research funds. Thanks to everyone who has supported this initiative and congratulations to UVic student-athletes Logan Fisher, Will Adams, Griffin Fougner-Rufus and Trinity Kettyls for organizing such a successful campaign, showing how while the pandemic doesn’t discriminate, there are still ways for everyone to come together.
