Happy #WomenInScience Day! We are incredibly lucky to have some extremely talented women on our team. Today we wanted to introduce you to one of them. Meet Jayden, the telemetry lead for our software team! Jayden has been a member of our team for three years and originally joined the team to grow her software engineering skills while promoting sustainability. As the telemetry team lead she is responsible for overseeing and implementing telemetry architecture. Recently, she an...d her team have been hard at work creating a new public website from scratch. Jayden helped create and test the telemetry training programs to onboard new members of the team. She and her team are also actively maintaining our real-time performance data website. Jayden's initiative and leadership have helped make our software team more successful and enjoyable. Despite the numerous challenges her team faced, Jayden continuously motivated members to push forward all while managing projects and taking on numerous project tasks herself.

Thank you to everyone who has supported our crowdfunding so far! We are so excited to share our second blog post featuring team alumni. This time we feature a conversation with Shawn Zwierzchowski (2005 -2007) who speaks on the importance of leadership in high-stress situations from his time as Chief Engineer on Schulich 1 and reflects on the future of the team and solar technology. Shawn also shares his incredible stories from his response to the frightening crash of Schulich 1 to running with the car strapped to his back through Alice Springs. Special thank you to team photographer Jonathan Groeneweg who has provided us with photos of the team. Did you know that we have a software team? On our 5th gen car Elysia they have worked on everything from implementing an infotainment touchscreen, adding a backup camera, and creating a website that streams real-time data about our car's performance during races! For our newest car Schulich Helios, the software team is working on programming the car’s embedded systems to make sure the electrical boards function properly, while also implementing Apple CarPlay so that we can listen to Here Comes The Sun next time we hit the road! #ucalgary #schulichhelios #schulichelysia #drivingsolar #crowdfunding

We have reached the last stop in our #RacetoReveal. This week we are taking a look at our most accomplished car yet, Schulich Elysia! Work on Schulich Elysia began in 2016, as our team continued to push the boundaries of solar technology. Many solar cars are engineered to be lightweight, aerodynamic, and efficient, specifically for races. Although this makes them fast, they are also highly uncomfortable and impractical cars that look like they came from a sci-fi movie. Schuli...ch Elysia was built to be a car for you to drive, innovating what a commercial solar car could look like! Building upon many of the features of Schulich Delta, Elysia was more aerodynamic, featured a better battery system, improved cooling, an infotainment touchscreen, commercial EV charging capabilities, and numerous other advancements speaking to the quality of the car. While engineered to be practical, Elysia is still a race car. Its capabilities were tested at the Formula Sun Grand Prix in 2019, our most successful race yet! After 122 laps and 673 kilometers, Schulich Elysia placed 1st in the Multi-Occupant Vehicle class and 4th overall! Additionally, Elysia won the Aesthetics Award, Mechanical Design Award, and the MOV Charging System Award. Schulich Elysia’s journey isn't over yet. With plans for upgrades and future racing opportunities, we hope to continue representing Calgary as the best Cruiser Class Solar Car team in Canada! We’re finally on the home stretch! #TheGiftofGen6 is just around the corner! This Christmas UofC Solar Car has a present for you! #TheGiftofGen6 On December 25, we’ll be giving you the first look at our new 6th generation car. With the online environment presented with COVID-19, our team has adapted and has spent the last year diligently engineering gen 6 with CAD software and simulations. Although still in the early stages of development, we’re excited to present to you the future of UofC Solar Car! #RacetoReveal #ucalgary #Gen6 #LegacyProject #schulich #solarcar #UCSolarCar #schulichengineer #schulichelysia #stem #educate #innovate #inspire #solar #yyc #calgary #greenpower #Christmas2020

Move over Santa, because on this holiday season, we’ll be giving you the first look at #TheGiftofGen6, our next solar car! In the meantime we’ll be showcasing our previous cars, starting with Soleon. Our team’s journey started back in 2004 when Calgary was announced as the finish line for the North American Solar Challenge. A team was quickly assembled, and work began immediately on creating a car in time for the rayce. In only 9 months the team was able design, fund, build, ...and Soleon. This feat can only be described as a miracle, considering the normal production cycle for a car is 2 years! When the Soleon crossed the finish line in Calgary, this home-favorite was greeted by thousands of excited and cheering fans, finishing 13th overall. Later that year, the little solar-powered car from Calgary finished first-in-class and 10th overall in the Panasonic World Solar Challenge in Australia, and began the nearly two decade legacy of the University of Calgary Solar Car Team! Be sure to stay tuned as we take you through our history in the #RaceToReveal. Pit stop two will be the Schulich 1, coming next week! #ucalgary #Gen6 #LegacyProject #schulich #solarcar #UCSolarCar #schulichengineer #schulichelysia #soleon #stem #educate #innovate #inspire #solar #yyc #calgary #greenpower #Christmas2020

Two more weeks until Christmas, and two more weeks until #TheGiftofGen6, the first look at our new generation 6 car! Since 2004, we’ve been striving to develop cars that are functional, with the goal that one day you could drive your own solar car! Today we’re taking a look at Schulich Delta, the first multi-occupant solar car in Canada and a great step towards practicality. After building single occupant vehicles for 7 years, our team decided to tackle the challenge of desi...gning Canada’s first cruiser class vehicle. With construction beginning in 2012, Schulich Delta was highly practical for a solar car, looking less like a UFO compared to the standard design. The car had two doors, cupholders, a passengers seat, and cargo space (just in case you wanted to go golfing)! Although these features seem standard for normal cars, it was a massive undertaking to incorporate them into a solar car. But in the end, the engineering expertise of Schulich Delta showed! At the World Solar Challenge in 2013, Delta firsted 8th in the cruiser class, and won the safety award. At the Formula Sun Grand Prix in 2015, Delta would finish 9th overall, and be the first cruiser class car to ever compete at the event! In addition to races, Delta would tour the streets of Manhattan as part of a promotion for National Geographic’s Breakthrough TV series, showcasing innovations in STEM. Schulich Delta stands a milestone for Canadian Solar Cars, acting as a glimpse towards a bright, more sustainable future! Next week on our #RaceToReveal we’ll finally arrive at our most recent car, Schulich Elysia. Make sure not to miss it! #ucalgary #Gen6 #LegacyProject #schulich #solarcar #UCSolarCar #schulichengineer #schulichelysia #stem #educate #innovate #inspire #solar #yyc #calgary #greenpower #Christmas2020 Here's a link to the Breakthrough article: https://arstechnica.com//cruising-in-manhattan-in-the-sch/
