Virtual kids would like you to meet Dr. Ed Les An expert in Pediatric emergency medicine, Ed has been based in Calgary for more than 25 years. Believe it or not, Ed was also a practicing veterinarian prior to becoming a people doctor! (How cool is that?) His prior training as a vet definitely comes in handy since babies/young kids, just like animals, often can’t tell you what is wrong! Ed is also a busy father of 4 and understands what it’s like to worry about your child. ...As a founding member of the Virtual Kids Pediatric Urgent Care, he feels strongly that kids deserve a kid specialist no matter where they live. This was one of his main motivations behind wanting to start Virtual Kids. We are certainly lucky to have him! Here is a question we get frequently: My son/daughter was exposed to COVID at school. I took them for a COVID test the next day and we just found out that they are negative. They can go back to school/sports now right? Unfortunately, the answer is no. When you have been exposed to COVID 19, you must isolate for 14 days no matter what. Here is a great info graphic that explains why!

The Virtual Kids story started with 7 pediatric emergency medicine physicians. Parents themselves, these Alberta doctors noticed that concerns about children often arose when it was least convenient for parents. Besides the Emergency Departments, there was also a lack of good quality after hours care options for children, especially for those living outside of major centres. With years of experience working in Canadian pediatric hospitals, these doctors also noticed that a lo...t of pediatric health concerns can be managed with advice alone and that it can be hard for parents to determine what is and is not a true emergency. When the pandemic hit and people stopped feeling comfortable bringing their children to Emergency Departments for fear of COVID, they decided it was the perfect time to bring a quality virtual after hours pediatric care option to the families of Alberta.
