Join us for a free, online, public artist talk by Gita Hashemi & Krys Verrall this week (NOV 17 | 2-3PM)! DETAILS: https://www.facebook.com/events/3364794120233891/ ABOUT THE ARTISTS:... Award-winning artist, curator and writer Gita Hashemi’s experimental transmedia practice spans over thirty years, encompassing work that draws on visual, media, performance, site specific and live art strategies. Exploring social relations and the interconnections of language and culture, Hashemi’s work centers on marginalized histories and contemporary politics, often with an eye on women’s experience. Recent themes in her work include decolonial acts and cultures of resistance, from 18th century East-West encounters and the 1953 coup in Iran to the 1979 Iranian Revolution; Indigeneity and land relations in Turtle Island and Palestine; notions and practices of rights and freedom of movement, and, most recently, radical feminism and women’s movement in the 20th century Iran. In 2021, she will conduct a Doris McCarthy Heritage Fund residency at the Fool’s Paradise during which she will produce a mail art and a podcast series. Hashemi has two limited series podcasts in circulation already, titled Emergent (in Farsi) and Dreams ReLoad (in English and Bulgarian) and has been creating site-specific mail art since 2016. Hashemi has received many art grants, and her work has been exhibited at festivals, galleries and museums nationally and internationally, reviewed extensively, and won local and international awards. Her project Grounding: States of Gender, based on the memories of an Iranian woman about gender and violence, was selected as the best exhibition of the year in 2017 by the Ontario Association of Art Galleries. Krys Verrall is a founding member and Artistic Programmer of Big Pond Small Fish. She is the lead artist for the current project, The Farm and the City and the Radio. She has been instrumental in developing BPSF’s philosophical approach to collaboration with vulnerable participants.
