Now that's a smile! Phineas was referred to us by his regular veterinarian in order to help him recover from cruciate surgery. Because he's an older boy, we not only helped him regain strength and muscle, but we developed a tailored home exercise program that he continues to do regularly. Now that he is a rehab graduate, Phin is able to visit his favourite place...The Book Addict on Springbank Road in London, where his photo is displayed at the counter and where he was the first dog to have his own account.
September is Animal Pain Awareness Month. One of the most important parts of rehabilitation is identifying and managing pain in our pets. Here's some information that can help owners determine if there pet is experiencing discomfort.
We're always excited when new clients come in and we were especially excited to meet Shadow. She's an 8 year old lop rabbit who has some back and hip arthritis, something that is quite common in rabbits. We're starting therapy with heat, massage and therapeutic LASER to help with the inflammation related to arthritis and to get her bouncing around again. She's a bit of a cuddler and enjoyed her treatment today. She even did well in the doggles.
Georgia had surgery to repair a torn cranial cruciate ligament in her stifle a few years back and started rehab to help her recovery. Since then, she's been a regular patient with the service, coming in regularly for fitness and conditioning. She continues to do well, maintaining good muscle mass and mobility in her hind legs. While she likes the treadmill, she does have the expectation of the occasional treat.
With the rehab service open two days a week for contact free appointments, long-term client Maddie came in to see us. Maddie has lost 15 pounds over the past year with diet and exercise. Dogs may not talk in words, but her answer to our question was pretty clear.
As the heat wave continues, we wanted to provide some more information in heat stroke. Although some dogs may be more predisposed to it, all dogs can suffer from it. Here are the signs to look for.
It's hot out there and there's no end in sight. Here are a few tips to help keep our furry friends safe in the heat.
And a few minutes later, we bid a fond farewell to our new friend, Herman.
With rehab opening up on a very limited basis, we were excited to get a chance to do a little wildlife rehab. We found this little painted turtle in the middle of a busy road and were able to safely stop and get her. These turtles are the only non-threatened turtle species in Ontario. They travel large distances looking for places to nest so we moved her to a nearby safe area.
We're under the first heat warning of the summer and it's important to remember that our furry friends can also suffer from heat stroke. Here are some signs to look for.
Due to COVID, we are really missing all of our rehab patients and thank everyone for keeping in touch and letting us know how things are going. To date, Maddie has lost over 12 pounds through diet and an exercise program incluidng hydrotherapy. She did let us know that she's missing the stuffed crab that she likes to carry when she's in the tank and we want to reassure her that it's waiting for her when life gets back to normal. Stay safe everyone! Video used with permission of Maddie's humans!
A few people out there might be getting a bit worried about the length of their cats nails. Here's a video that gives some good tips on trimming your cat's nails on your own.
Gulliver was a long-term client who came to rehab for heat, massage, LASER, therapeutic exercise and hydrotherapy to help with symptoms of arthritis related to hip dysplasia. His human sent us a photo in which Gulliver clearly stated his favourite thing about rehab...other than the treats....
Today is World Veterinary Day! If you have to go out today and pass a clinic, honk your horn to show support!
